Help Shape the Science Behind Island Restoration

At HAR, we’re restoring some of the world’s most important island ecosystems — and we need sharp, curious minds to help design the science that underpins it.

We’re looking for an Ecologist / Ecological Data Analyst who thrives at the intersection of fieldwork, data, and real-world conservation impact. This is a role for someone who enjoys getting their boots muddy one week and diving into complex datasets the next.

You’ll contribute to seabird conservation and island restoration projects across Scotland, the UK, and internationally — helping translate ecological data into decisions that genuinely make a difference.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Designing robust, representative ecological monitoring programmes
  • Undertaking fieldwork on coastal and island sites (yes — expect travel and adventure)
  • Managing, cleaning, and analysing complex ecological datasets
  • Applying statistical and quantitative methods to real-world conservation challenges
  • Producing clear, high-quality technical reports and visualisations
  • Helping innovate how we monitor and measure restoration success
  • Collaborating closely with a driven, multidisciplinary team

Who We’re Looking For

You’re someone who is:

  • Technically strong but also practical and solutions-focused
  • Curious and ambitious, with a desire to keep learning
  • A team player who thrives in a collaborative environment
  • Comfortable balancing fieldwork, deadlines, and analysis
  • Excited by the opportunity to travel and work in diverse environments

You’ll need

  • A degree (or higher) in Ecology, Environmental Science, Statistics, or similar
  • Experience working with ecological data and statistical analysis
  • Geospatial analysis skills (e.g. GIS)
  • Experience with tools such as R, Python, or similar
  • Strong attention to detail and data integrity
  • Understanding of survey design and ecological monitoring principles
  • Strong writing and communication skills
  • Willingness to travel and undertake fieldwork (UK + occasional international)

Desirable (but not essential)

  • Experience with seabird ecology, island restoration, or invasive species
  • Experience analysing long-term monitoring datasets
  • Full UK driving licence

What You’ll Get

  • Meaningful work on high-impact restoration projects
  • Opportunities to travel to unique and remote locations
  • Real career development — grow your technical and field expertise
  • A supportive, hard-working, and collaborative team culture
  • Ongoing training and professional development
  • Flexible, hybrid working
  • Competitive salary (based on experience)
