We are seeking an inspiring, imaginative and committed Director in Residence to join our thriving Drama department for a fixed term appointment from September 2026 to July 2027. This is a unique opportunity for an emerging or established theatre practitioner to bring fresh creative energy, industry‑relevant expertise and a passion for working with young people to a dynamic and ambitious boarding school environment. Over the past three years, our Drama department has undergone a period of significant growth, expanding the opportunities available to students both onstage and behind the scenes. As we enter the next phase of this journey, we are looking for a practitioner who will help sustain this momentum - someone who is excited by the chance to shape young performers, contribute to a vibrant co‑curricular programme and work within a fully equipped professional theatre space.

About the Role

The Director in Residence will work under the day‑to‑day guidance of the Head of Drama, contributing to rehearsals, productions, teaching and the wider creative life of the department. They will play a key role in maintaining the high standards of provision our students now expect, ensuring continuity of vision and supporting the delivery of both curricular and co‑curricular Drama. In addition, the postholder will contribute to the pastoral life of the school, supporting the wellbeing and supervision of boarders during evenings and weekends. As such, this role offers a rich, fully immersive experience of life within an independent boarding school.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to rehearsals, productions and performance events across the school year.
  • Assist with trips, workshops and co‑curricular Drama activities.
  • Support the delivery of targeted academic intervention, including GCSE and A Level sessions where appropriate.
  • Work within our professional theatre, The Blake, helping to deliver high‑quality productions to near‑professional standards.
  • Teach Drama at Key Stage 3, inspiring and challenging pupils of all abilities.
  • Play an active role in the pastoral life of the school, including evening and weekend duties within the boarding community.
  • Build positive relationships with pupils and serve as a warm, professional role model.
  • Bring fresh ideas, creative approaches and contemporary industry insight to enrich the department.
