Pastoral Mentor
Haberdashers’ Abraham Darby is passionate about learning in its widest sense. Our mission is to ensure that our pupils value and enjoy their learning inside and outside the classroom.
We have an excellent opportunity for an inspirational, committed and enthusiastic Pastoral Mentor to join the existing team as soon as possible.
Hours: 35 hours per week (8.30-16.00), Term time only (38 working weeks a year)
Salary: Grade 4, Point 5.
Actual Salary £22,293 for term time only (FTE Salary £28,438)
Aims of Post of Responsibility: The Pastoral Mentor will provide targeted pastoral support to pupils attending our ADAPT and THRIVE provision. All pupils within the provision have identified Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, and some have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). Working as a trusted adult, the Pastoral Mentor will build positive relationships with pupils, support their emotional wellbeing, and help them overcome barriers to learning and engagement. Through individual mentoring, intervention sessions and in-class support, the Pastoral Mentor will promote resilience, self-regulation, positive behaviour, attendance and personal development, enabling pupils to thrive both in school and beyond.
The ADAPT and THRIVE provisions are two of our alternative pathways and a fundamental part of our pastoral support. The provisions support KS4 / KS3 learners, who have a variety of Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and require a more bespoke environment to access a broad and balanced curriculum.

School Information - Haberdashers' Abraham Darby
Haberdashers' Abraham Darby is a coeducational secondary school with a sixth form, educating around 1,058 pupils aged 11–18 in Madeley, Telford. The school converted to academy status in September 2008 and is sponsored by the Worshipful Company of Haberdashers. It occupies a purpose-built, modern school building
The school is anchored by three clear values — Aspiration, Respect and Excellence (ARE) — and a vision of "Success for All" that runs through its curriculum, pastoral system and extra-curricular offer. It has a genuinely thriving extra-curricular programme, with particular strength and a track record of external success in music (including its Abraham Darby Showband), rugby, and a fast-growing netball programme, alongside cadets (incorporating Duke of Edinburgh's Award) and a strong sixth-form enrichment offer. The school also benefits from a growing alumni network who return to support current pupils through mentoring, careers talks and work experience. The school is located within a short distance from the picturesque River Severn and Ironbridge Gorge, not far from Telford and Shrewsbury, with good railway, road and motorway links to both the M6 and M54.
The school is backed by a genuinely supportive Trust — both the HWMAT Board of Trustees and the executive team — and by its sponsor, the Worshipful Company of Haberdashers. The Local Governing Body includes skilled, experienced governors who combine strong support with rigorous, informed challenge. The school benefits from constructive relationships with the Department for Education, Telford & Wrekin local authority and neighbouring schools. Staff work hard, and there is a real and growing appetite across the local community — parents, alumni and local employers — to support the school and help it improve outcomes for every pupil.
The Haberdashers' Company - an introduction
The Haberdashers' Company is one of the Great Twelve Livery Companies and has a long history closely connected to the development of the City of London. We are a welcoming and inclusive organisation with a strong social purpose. We are proud of our roots, traditions and values that go back centuries, but equally, we are a modern organisation committed to a vibrant and diverse future. We harness the resources of the Haberdashers’ community to empower young people from every background and enable them to flourish.
The Trust and Sponsor
Haberdashers' Abraham Darby is part of the Haberdashers' West Midlands Academies Trust (HWMAT), and, through its sponsorship arrangements, part of the wider national family of schools associated with the Worshipful Company of Haberdashers — a family that includes both private and state schools in London and Wales. This affiliation gives the school access to a network of high-performing schools, shared expertise, professional development and governance support, and a long tradition of academic ambition and civic purpose. The Trust and its sponsor are committed to supporting the leadership and improvement of Haberdashers' Abraham Darby: the sponsor directly funds ASPIRE, an innovative Sixth Form mentoring initiative delivered in partnership with the Trust.
Safeguarding and Safer Recruitment Statement
Haberdasher’s Abraham Darby is committed to safeguarding, protecting and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. All teachers and support staff are accountable for the way in which they exercise authority, manage risk, use resources and protect pupils from discrimination and avoidable harm. All staff, whether paid or voluntary, have a duty to keep young people safe and to protect them from physical harm. When an individual accepts a role that involves working with children and young people they need to understand and acknowledge that the responsibilities and trust are inherent in that role.
All posts working with children, young people and vulnerable adults will be subject to an Enhanced DBS check (including a check of the Children's Barred list) and mandatory pre-employment safer recruitment and vetting checks. On-line checks will be carried out on all shortlisted candidates who are also required to complete and submit a criminal self-disclosure form prior to interview. All applicants need to have the Right to Work in the UK to be considered for the role. ID checks (including photographic) will be carried out at interview stage. References will be taken up prior to interview. Any offer of employment is conditional upon certain conditions which will be outlined in the offer letter to the successful candidate. All new staff are expected to undertake mandatory training: safeguarding, online safety, prevent and allergy awareness prior to their employment start date.
