General Summary: This position reports to the Head of Controls and Systems or their designee; and is located in Banbury, UK. Responsible for performing the role of on-car Systems Engineer, and providing leadership, support and direction for the Systems team when at the circuit. This position is the point of contact for trackside systems matters, both within Haas F1 Team, with our Power Unit supplier and with external entities such as the FIA.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Promote teamwork and effective communications to develop working relationships between all personnel and departments.
  • Perform the role of Systems Engineer on one of the race cars.
  • Attend trackside meetings on behalf of Systems.
  • Liaise with our Power Unit supplier on matters relating to trackside systems.
  • Mentor, train and support Trackside Systems staff.
  • Work closely with the Head of Controls and Systems to ensure the smooth running of Systems functions at the track.
  • Work closely with the Head of Controls and Systems and the Chief Mechanic to plan the workload of Systems staff to ensure appropriate cover for car build and operation activities.
  • Ensure faults are correctly reported.
  • Report daily within trackside events to Team Management and the Head of Controls and Systems detailing Systems activities and issues.
  • Delegate tasks to the Controls and Systems Support Engineer.
  • Follow all safety regulations in all venues.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Head of Controls and Systems or their designee.

Education and Work Experience:

  • Degree or equivalent in electrical engineering.
  • Previous experience of working with on car electronic systems in Formula One is essential.
  • Previous experience in a leadership capacity highly desirable.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong communication skills, written and verbal.
  • Strong technical background in racing car systems.
  • Able to work to a consistently high standard in stressful and time sensitive situations.
  • Have quick decision-making skills whilst working through problems in a scientific and analytical way.
  • Able to lead a team, set a good example to others in the team.
  • Able to communicate technical details to non-expert team personnel.

Equipment and Applications:

  • Excellent computer literacy, with experience of Mclaren Applied software ADS, ATLAS 10 and System Monitor as well as Microsoft Office.
  • Understanding of Mclaren Applied Standard ECUs and peripheral units.
  • Experience with VBA or C# programming desirable.

Work Environment Physical Demands: An ability to work and prioritize within a high pressure, time sensitive environment while retaining a methodical approach is essential. The role may require extensive domestic & international travel and a willingness to work long and flexible hours including weekends. This position may require lifting to 50 pounds, repeated bending, squatting and manual dexterity. Fast-paced work environment requiring heavy mental demands. Work environment includes machinery, race cars, 7-post and other rigs, grinding debris, and hazardous fluids. All employees must ensure compliance with the Company Health and Safety Policy, and all relevant other statutory Health and Safety legislation.
