The Opportunity:

Our client, a leading EPC contractor, is seeking an experienced Quantity Surveyor to join the commercial team on a major Energy from Waste construction project in Thurrock, Essex. This is a site-based contract position offering an initial 12-month engagement with the potential for extension based on project requirements.

The successful candidate will play a key role in the commercial management of significant civil engineering and structural building packages throughout the construction phase, ensuring robust cost control, contract administration, and commercial reporting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Commercial management of civil engineering and structural building work packages.
  • Administration of subcontract agreements, including change management and contractual compliance.
  • Preparation, assessment, and agreement of subcontract valuations and payments.
  • Management and valuation of variations, compensation events, and change orders.
  • Monitoring project costs, forecasts, and budgets to ensure commercial performance targets are achieved.
  • Preparation of cost reports, cash flow forecasts, and commercial dashboards for project leadership.
  • Evaluation and negotiation of subcontractor claims and final accounts.
  • Support procurement activities, including tender evaluations and commercial assessments.
  • Liaise closely with project managers, engineers, planners, and procurement teams to ensure effective commercial delivery.
  • Identify commercial risks and opportunities and provide recommendations to mitigate exposure.
  • Ensure all commercial activities are undertaken in accordance with contractual obligations and company procedures.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Proven experience as a Quantity Surveyor within major construction, infrastructure, industrial, power generation, or energy projects.
  • Strong experience managing civil engineering and structural building packages of work.
  • Previous experience working for an EPC contractor, principal contractor, or major construction contractor.
  • Sound knowledge of contract administration, commercial management, and change control processes.
  • Experience managing subcontractor accounts from procurement through to final account settlement.
  • Strong understanding of NEC and/or FIDIC forms of contract.
  • Excellent commercial acumen and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary project team on a complex construction programme.
  • Degree qualified in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, or a related discipline preferred.
  • Membership of RICS, CIOB, or similar professional body is advantageous but not essential.

Desirable Experience:

  • Previous Energy from Waste, power generation, waste management, industrial process plant, or heavy infrastructure project experience.
  • Experience working on projects valued in excess of £100 million.
  • Familiarity with reinforced concrete structures, steel-framed buildings, earthworks, foundations, and associated civils packages.
