A Mobile Plant Operator is responsible for operating heavy machinery and vehicles used in site operations, such as loaders, excavators, telehandlers, or forklifts. The role ensures safe, efficient handling of materials, supports production processes, and maintains equipment in good working order. The employee will be responsible for completing all tasks and assignments as directed by the manager in a timely and efficient manner.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Operate mobile plant machinery such as forklifts, loading shovel and telehandler to move waste and recyclable materials safely around the site.
- Load and unload materials for processing, sorting, and storage.
- Assist with stockpiling and organizing recyclable bales and materials for dispatch.
- Manage vehicle movements within tipping areas, recycling bays, and loading docks according to site traffic plans.
- Identify and report any non-recyclable or hazardous materials in loads immediately.
Equipment Checks & Maintenance:
- Perform pre-start inspections including fluid levels, tires/tracks, hydraulics, and control systems.
- Conduct routine cleaning, refuelling, and minor maintenance to keep machinery in optimal condition.
- Report faults, malfunctions, and maintenance needs promptly to the maintenance team.
- Maintain accurate records of machine hours, fuel use, and completed maintenance.
Safety, Compliance & Environmental Standards:
- Follow all site-specific health, safety, environmental, and quality (HSEQ) policies and procedures.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and always ensure safe operation of machinery.
- Report near misses, incidents, or hazards immediately to supervisors.
- Ensure all operational and pedestrian areas are kept clear of obstacles and debris, maintaining high housekeeping standards.
- Assist with dust, noise, and waste minimization efforts to reduce environmental impact.
Teamwork & Support:
- Collaborate with site supervisors, maintenance staff, and other operators to ensure smooth operations.
- Assist during equipment breakdowns and participate in emergency response procedures.
- Act as Fire Warden or First Aider when required to support site safety.
- Help with sorting and segregation tasks if needed, supporting overall recycling processes.
- Provide feedback on machinery performance and operational improvements to management.
Experience:
- Previous experience of working in waste industry.
- Previous experience working with mobile and static plant.
- Hold training certificates for telehandler and forklift, Working at height: Scissor lift in house training or IPAF, First aider training, Fire marshal training, Abrasive wheel.
Skills:
- Positive “Can do” attitude, willing to learn.
- Team player, able and willing to help others as required.
- Self-managing and motivation.
- Ability to communicate clearly and precisely with a good command of the English Language.
- Good levels of observation and listening skills and concentration.
