About us: Sizewell C is a large, planned nuclear power station being built on the Suffolk coast in the UK. The project is expected to generate 3.2 GW of clean electricity, enough for 6 million homes. This is a significant part of the UK's strategy for clean energy and energy security, with the goal of providing reliable, low-carbon power and supporting economic growth.
The Opportunity: The Civils General Operative is responsible for assisting in the safe and efficient delivery of civil engineering and construction works across the site. The Civils General Operative will support site teams with manual labouring, materials handling, and basic construction activities, helping to maintain productivity, safety, and quality standards within a regulated nuclear site environment.
Responsibilities:
- Carry out general civil works and site duties including excavation support, concreting, shuttering, drainage, formwork assistance, and reinstatement.
- Assist tradespeople and plant operators in the execution of civil engineering tasks.
- Load, unload, move, and handle materials, tools, and equipment safely and efficiently.
- Carry out site preparation and clearance tasks such as digging, compacting, sweeping, and tidying work areas.
- Erect and maintain temporary fencing, barriers, signage, and access routes as directed.
- Work in accordance with method statements, risk assessments (RAMS), and permit-to-work systems.
- Adhere strictly to site health, safety, and environmental procedures, including wearing correct PPE at all times.
- Report any hazards, unsafe acts, or near misses immediately to supervision.
- Maintain good housekeeping in work areas to support safety and environmental compliance.
- Support waste segregation and environmental protection activities (e.g., spill control, waste sorting).
- Attend daily briefings, toolbox talks, and training sessions as required.
- Cooperate with other site teams to support progress and meet construction programme targets.
Ideal candidate:
- Previous experience working as a General Operative / Labourer on large-scale civil engineering or construction projects.
- CSCS Labourer or Skilled Worker Card.
- Basic understanding of site safety procedures and willingness to follow instructions carefully.
- Experience working on nuclear, power generation, or other highly regulated construction sites (e.g., Hinkley Point C, Sellafield).
- Additional site certifications such as Manual Handling, Banksman / Traffic Marshall, Confined Space, Working at Height, or First Aid.
- Experience assisting with concrete pours, rebar fixing, drainage, or similar civils work.
- Awareness of environmental best practice and waste segregation.
- CPCS or NPORS qualifications for basic plant or vehicle movements (if applicable).
Skills:
- Team player with a positive and safety-focused attitude.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Reliable and punctual.
