University of Oxford - Departmental Lecturer in the Economy and Business of Japan

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Nissan Institute of Japanese Studies, a leading centre for the study of contemporary Japan in the world, which is in the Oxford School of Global and Area Studies, to develop experience in teaching and course administration and to advance a research agenda. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to lecture and teach graduate students, to contribute to academic administration of both departments, and engage in advanced study and academic research.

Responsibilities:

• Contribute to the MSc and MPhil in Japanese Studies teaching programme, including Research Methods, an Option course on the Economy and Business of Japan, and dissertation supervision.
• Contribute to the Global and Area Studies programme, and/or the undergraduate Japanese Studies programme, as requested by the Director.
• Be first contact for students in matters relating to attendance, conduct, coursework, performance, and welfare (referring matters to appropriate others).
• Undertake advanced academic research to underpin lectures and class teaching.
• Manage independent research projects or specific areas of research within a broad programme, including developing research questions within a specific context; conducting original research; analysing qualitative and/or quantitative data from a variety of sources, and developing appropriate analytical protocols and techniques to support research.
• Identify sources of research income, develop proposals, and make funding applications to secure it.
• Write research articles for prestigious peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, and reviews, present papers at conferences, and lead seminars to disseminate research findings.
• Contribute to the intellectual life of the department, by attending seminars, and contributing to the organisation of the Nissan Seminar Series, and of relevant conferences in their field.
• Co-operate in the administrative work of the Nissan Institute under the direction of the Director, and participate in the student admissions process.
• Participate in the work of departmental committees like the teaching committees of the graduate degrees and the Nissan Institute Management Committee.
• Contribute to a respectful and inclusive working and learning environment.

Selection criteria:

• Hold a doctorate with a research focus in an area related to Japanese Studies, Economics, or Business or a closely related field such as Political Economy, Economic Sociology, Economic Anthropology, Management, or Economic History.
• Proven ability and experience necessary to teach high-achieving and challenging graduate students, in a multi-disciplinary environment and to carry out student assessment, examination and course design.
• The willingness and ability to supervise MSc and MPhil dissertations in Japanese Studies across a range of topics.
• Strong publication record and familiarity with the existing literature and research related to the economy and/or business of Japan.
• Fluency and ability to conduct primary research using the Japanese language.
• Sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop research projects and methodologies.
• Ability to present research findings effectively to fellow professionals or other informed members of the public.
• The ability to contribute effectively to the administrative work of the Nissan Institute and the ability to innovate and work effectively with colleagues as part of an interdisciplinary team.
• Willingness to work in a collegial atmosphere, contributing to the intellectual life of the department.
• Willingness to complete relevant training.
• An ability to foster a collaborative and inclusive academic environment for people from different backgrounds.
• Evidence of strong quantitative or mixed methods competence.
• An understanding of the needs of and/or experience of working with a diverse population of staff and/or students.
