The Risk and Intelligence Service (RIS) is central to HMRC's work in protecting the UK's financial integrity. Our mission is to help HMRC understand and manage risks to taxation and border security, supporting the well-being of the UK. We achieve this by gathering and analysing high-quality intelligence from both within the UK and abroad.

Intelligence Services (IS) is a multi-functional team within RIS, dedicated to the safe and lawful collection, assessment, and distribution of intelligence and evidence to support HMRC and partner organisations. The National Co-ordination Unit (NCU) plays a vital role in this effort, providing essential support and coordination to operational teams across government.

Job description

We're looking for a motivated team player with great communication skills to join our National Co-ordination Unit (NCU). This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a team that supports HMRC, other government departments, and law enforcement agencies in tackling criminal activity.

As an Assistant Intelligence Officer, you'll be a key part of our 24/7 operational unit, providing coordination, information, and operational support. This role involves supporting frontline staff, conducting intelligence checks, sharing information, and helping coordinate operations when needed.

Your first 8 weeks in the role will be paid training in a supportive environment, giving you the skills and confidence to succeed. It's an exciting time to join the team!

Working Patterns:

You’ll receive an Annual Attendance Allowance of 27.57% (£6,693) on top of your basic salary for working full time (37 hours per week) in a 24/7 shift pattern 365 days of the year. The role follows a rotating 8-week roster, covering a range of shifts (mostly 10 hours each), including night shifts. We'll always provide reasonable notice for any changes to your working schedule.

Person specification

As an Assistant Intelligence Officer, you will:

  • Work as part of a team, handling urgent enquiries from colleagues in HMRC and other law enforcement agencies.
  • Support HMRC caseworkers by gathering, analysing, and accurately recording information from a wide range of digital sources.
  • Manage and protect confidential information with care.
  • Provide excellent customer service, maintaining strong working relationships with colleagues, managers, and external contacts.
  • Adapt to cover a range of responsibilities and manage conflicting priorities effectively in a dynamic environment.

What We're Looking For

We are looking for people who are:

  • Organised: Able to manage changing and conflicting priorities while keeping tasks on track.
  • Proactive: Happy to take initiative, flexible in covering various roles, and accountable for your work.
  • Good communicators: Able to work well with others and build positive relationships.
  • Detail-oriented: Careful and precise in recording and analysing information to support decision-making.

No previous experience in intelligence is required as training is provided. We encourage applications from all backgrounds, including those new to the Civil Service.

Vetting Requirements

You must pass a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. Security vetting at the Security Check (SC) level is required, which includes 5 years of consecutive residency in the UK. Non-Police Personnel Vetting (NPPV3) is also needed.

Due to operational needs, these posts are full-time; however, applicants who need to work a more flexible arrangement are welcome to apply. We can't guarantee that we can meet all requests to work flexibly as any agreement will be subject to business ability to accommodate. Any request to work a more flexible arrangement should be made prior to your acceptance of the provisional offer.
