Custodial Worker

The H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) invites applications from suitably qualified Virgin Islanders or Belongers for the position of Custodial Worker within the Facilities Management Department.

The Custodial Worker is responsible for performing a wide range of custodial and housekeeping duties to ensure that the College's buildings, classrooms, offices, and other facilities are maintained in a clean, safe, healthy, and sanitary condition. The successful candidate will play an essential role in supporting a welcoming and well-maintained learning and working environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Regularly carry out cleaning of offices, meeting/classrooms and any recreational facilities, including sweeping, dusting, wiping surfaces, mopping and vacuuming.
• Sanitize and disinfect surfaces in restrooms, common areas, and high-touch points.
• Mop tiles and concrete floor in rooms, landings and stairs.
• Maintain restroom facilities by cleaning and disinfecting all restroom floors, toilets, toilet seats, walls, partitions and fixtures; and replenishing toilet tissue, paper towels, and soap as needed.
• Empty all waste baskets and garbage cans, and place garbage in an outside storage bin.
• Clean entrances and exits including glass, doors, and hardware.
• Clean windows, glass surfaces, and mirrors.
• Clean, wash and disinfect drinking fountains.
• Report and document as needed minor maintenance issues, such as leaky faucets, burned-out light bulbs, and damaged furniture.
• Safely operate and maintain cleaning equipment.
• Conduct routing security checks to ensure that doors and windows are locked after cleaning.
• Monitor and manage cleaning supplies and request replenishment as needed.
• Adhere to safety protocols, including the proper use of cleaning chemicals, equipment, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Respond promptly to spills or accidents to ensure employee, student and guest safety.
• Monitor online systems such as Max Panda for assignments and indicate project status; and
• Any other duties or tasks that may be assigned on an as-needed basis
  

Competencies

• Ability to learn and execute established principles, practices and procedures in custodial work
• Develop the abilities necessary for the basic operation of machinery/equipment and supplies used
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions
• Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties
• Work independently in the absence of supervision
  

Qualifications and Experience

• A high school diploma or equivalent qualification.
• A minimum of two (2) years of experience in a custodial, janitorial, or similar role.
• The ability to read, write, and communicate effectively
