H J Newman is a family‑owned Funeral directors based in Slough and an established part of the community for 65 years. In such a personal profession we recognise the importance of our team members. Our colleagues serve as ambassadors for our family business and custodians of our company ethos, caring for both the living and the deceased. We are currently hiring a Funeral Service Team Member (Chauffeur/Bearer) dedicated to serving families at a difficult time.
This full‑time role requires a minimum of 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday. You will support Funeral Directors by assisting with all aspects of funeral arrangements and services, including attending funerals, chauffeuring, preparing coffins and the deceased, and maintaining the mortuary. Previous relevant experience is preferred but not essential, as full training will be provided. A full, clean, manual driving licence is required. Smart appearance is essential; a uniform will be provided.
Key Responsibilities- Attend funerals, driving vehicles, maintaining vehicles, and bearing coffins on the shoulder.
- Remove the deceased from their place of death to our premises in a dignified manner.
- Check and maintain the mortuary register.
- Prepare coffins, including dressing the coffin prior to funerals.
- Prepare the deceased for presentation in the Chapel of Rest.
- Prepare graves and plots for ashes interment.
- Keep all premises clean and tidy, especially mortuary areas, preparation rooms, fridge areas, and the chapel.
- Adhere to all health and safety requirements related to funeral care.
- Assist with any other duties that arise on a day‑to‑day basis, including being available on a 24‑hour call‑out system in accordance with local rota agreements, for which an additional payment will be received.
- Full, clean, manual driving licence.
