Part qualified or newly qualified European Patent Attorney “Patent Counsel”

The opportunity

Hitachi Energy is seeking a Patent Counsel to strengthen its global IP team, focusing on our Sustainable Products portfolio, including Transformers and High Voltage products.

As Patent Counsel, you will ensure our strategic IP portfolio aligns with our IP strategy. Your responsibilities include drafting, filing, prosecuting patent applications, and maintaining and defending patent rights, in collaboration with our Patent Counsels.

The role can be based in London or Birmingham, with options for onsite, hybrid, or remote work within the UK. Other European locations such as Milan, Barcelona, Madrid, or Vasteras are possible, with country-dependent hybrid arrangements. Relocation and visa support are not provided. The role may require occasional domestic and international travel.

How you’ll make an impact

  • Support and advise on invention disclosures, identify IP opportunities, and align filings with company strategy.
  • Draft, file, prosecute patent applications, and manage external counsel and suppliers.
  • Lead risk management activities across jurisdictions and monitor competitor patent activity.
  • Educate and raise awareness of IP within R&D and beyond, collaborating with Strategic IP Counsels.
  • Contribute to projects aimed at improving IP awareness and performance.

Your background

  • Part or Newly-Qualified European Patent Attorney with a degree in electrical engineering, electronics, physics, or mechanical engineering; experience in IP focusing on electromechanical inventions.
  • Experience with computer-implemented inventions is advantageous.
  • Flexible, proactive, and able to work with global teams.
  • Strong communication skills and excellent analytical abilities.
  • High proficiency in English is essential.
