We are looking for a practical and creative Design Engineer to develop high-quality retail display solutions from initial concept through to manufacture and installation. Using SolidWorks, you will produce accurate 3D models, production drawings and specifications for bespoke point-of-sale, shopfitting and display projects. You will work closely with sales, project management, production, suppliers and clients to deliver attractive, robust and cost-effective designs.
Design Engineer – Retail Displays (SolidWorks)
Key Responsibilities
- Create detailed 3D models, assemblies and manufacturing drawings in SolidWorks.
- Develop retail displays, point-of-sale units, fixtures and shopfitting components from briefs and concepts.
- Design for manufacture using materials such as timber, sheet metal, plastics, acrylic and fabricated components.
- Prepare bills of materials, cutting information and technical specifications.
- Review designs for strength, stability, safety, functionality, cost and ease of manufacture.
- Produce prototypes and revise designs following testing, client feedback and production input.
- Liaise with customers, suppliers, project managers and workshop teams to resolve technical queries.
- Support projects through production and installation, ensuring drawings and revisions are controlled.
- Identify opportunities to simplify construction, reduce waste and improve product quality.
- Manage multiple projects and meet agreed deadlines.
What We’re Looking For
- Proven experience using SolidWorks in a product, furniture, shopfitting, point-of-sale or manufacturing environment.
- Strong understanding of 3D modelling, assemblies, technical drawings and tolerances.
- Good knowledge of manufacturing processes, materials and practical construction methods.
- Ability to interpret briefs and turn concepts into accurate, production-ready designs.
- Strong problem-solving skills and close attention to detail.
- Clear communication skills and the ability to collaborate with both technical and non-technical colleagues.
- Organised approach, with the ability to prioritise work across several live projects.
- Relevant qualification in product design, mechanical engineering, design engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
Desirable Experience
- Experience designing retail displays, joinery, furniture, exhibition stands or interior fixtures.
- Knowledge of sheet metal, CNC machining, routing, fabrication or timber-based manufacturing.
- Experience with rendering, visualisation, PDM or ERP systems.
- Awareness of relevant structural, fire-safety and accessibility considerations for retail environments.
