Wanted: For: As soon as possible. SCIENCE TECHNICIAN Permanent (Part-Time) Position. Working hours: 22.2 hours per year (40 weeks per year, which is a school term plus INSET days plus 1 week out of term time). Person Specification
The successful candidate should:
- Hold a recognised science or technician qualification or be in the process of completing a course leading to such a qualification.
- Be fully committed to adhering to section 175 of the Education Act, 2022 (duties in relation to the welfare of children) while following the Safeguarding Procedures endorsed by the North Wales Safeguarding Board.
- Be an energetic, enthusiastic and well-organised person with prior experience of working as a laboratory technician and with knowledge of the theory and practice in providing technical support across all three sciences.
- Be able to communicate with staff and pupils bilingually in both Welsh and English or have a willingness to learn and improve.
- Have a willingness to learn, adapt and improve technical skills to keep up with the changing requirements of the science curriculum.
- Possess a thorough knowledge of relevant health and safety regulations.
- Show discretionary effort and initiative and be able to work undirected and unsupervised as well as in cooperation with other staff as part of a team.
- Be able to work with a variety of people, including children, in a variety of circumstances.
- Be able to prepare equipment and practical resources required for the delivery of the science curriculum at Key Stage 3, GCSE and Advanced level, including the preparation of chemical reagents, care of plants and animals, use and maintenance of electrical and technical equipment.
- Be familiar with the use of computer hardware and associated software in science teaching.
- Be well organised, adaptable and able to use his/her initiative to maintain laboratories, preparatory rooms, greenhouse etc. in good, clean order, to monitor the equipment and chemical stocks and to keep stocks of general laboratory equipment and reagents up to specified levels.
- Be able to assist with photocopying, stapling, laminating and the use of Microsoft Office to prepare documents and maintain spreadsheets.
Specific Duties – Science Technician:
- To be responsible to the Head of Science Faculty and delegated representatives for providing technical support across all sciences, including the preparation of chemical reagents, care of plants and animals, use of technical equipment, etc.
- To prepare equipment and practical resources required for the delivery of KS3, KS4 and KS5 programmes of study as directed by the Head of Science and delegated representatives.
- To clean, maintain and repair all Faculty equipment and resources.
- To liaise with the school’s Administration Officer and Caretaker for the repair and maintenance of fixtures and fittings.
- To maintain laboratories, resource rooms, stock rooms and preparatory rooms in a clean and safe condition.
- To regularly maintain stocks of general laboratory and preparatory room equipment.
- To monitor equipment and chemical stocks and advise the Head of Science and Heads of Department of the need for ordering new equipment or stock.
- To assist in the photocopying, stapling, and binding of any papers/teaching resources required in the event of the unforeseen absence of the Head of Science.
- To assist in the training of other technical staff as directed by the Head of Science.
- To assist science teachers in the demonstration of practical activities, and to trial experiments as required.
General:
- Responsible for self-development.
- Ensure compliance with Health and Safety rules in the workplace.
- Operate within the school’s policies in relation to equal opportunities and equality.
- Responsible for managing information in accordance with the School’s information management standards and guidelines.
- Responsible for reporting any concern or suspicion that a child or vulnerable adult is being abused.
