Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our cancer services pharmacy team. You will be part of a growing multi-professional team that provides specialist cancer care to patients at Guy\’s and St Thomas\’ NHS Foundation Trust. This position is for pharmacists who wish to gain experience in all aspects of pharmacy cancer services, gaining skills and knowledge as a foundation for a future career as a highly specialist oncology/haematology pharmacist.

Main duties of the job

You will work alongside other specialist oncology pharmacists on a rotational programme within oncology. The rotational areas include:

  • Clinical pharmacy service to oncology, haematology, and surgical oncology patients on our inpatient wards
  • Outpatient clinics, reviewing prescriptions for oral and IV systemic anti-cancer therapies (SACT)
  • Our Chemotherapy Day Units at the Guy\’s Cancer Centre and Queen Mary\’s, Sidcup
  • Supervise the safe and accurate dispensing of aseptically prepared SACT
  • Working on the set-up and ongoing management of oncology clinical trials, with our specialist oncology clinical trials team

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Candidates should have demonstrable competencies in hospital clinical pharmacy practice, excellent communication skills, and commitment to pharmaceutical care. Furthermore, candidates should be highly organized and have undertaken a Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy (or equivalent).

Following successful completion of an accreditation programme, the post holder will clinically screen prescriptions for systemic anticancer therapy for inpatients and outpatients in accordance with procedures.

  • Demonstrates the ability to provide a safe and effective clinical pharmacy service to oncology/haematology patients.
  • Demonstrates the ability to provide a safe and effective aseptic service to cancer patients.
  • An ability to prioritise workload and to work accurately.
  • Previous experience in delivering training and education.

Skills

  • Integrates research evidence and audit into practice. Evidence of leading or participation in research and/or audit.
  • Identifies own training needs and actively seeks training opportunities and maintains a portfolio of practice.
  • Basic IT literacy – ability to use Microsoft office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Outlook.
  • Good inter-personal skills, with the ability to liaise and influence senior managers and clinicians.
  • Demonstrates good clinical knowledge, clinical reasoning, and judgement.
  • IT literacy – has used electronic prescribing software and other clinical software and databases. Familiar with basic Excel functionality.
  • Evaluates the quality of own work.

Knowledge

  • GPhC membership.
  • Higher degree/Diploma in clinical pharmacy practice or equivalent experience.
