We are offering a fantastic opportunity for a dynamic and innovative experienced Clinical Scientist to join our senior scientific leadership team at Synnovis Genomics laboratory, part of the South East Genomic Laboratory Hub (SEGLH) based at Guy’s Hospital.
The postholder will support the leadership of a large Cytogenomics service which includes one of the largest Prenatal and Reproductive Genomics services in the UK providing QF-PCR rapid aneuploidy testing for the whole of London and the South East. The postholder will deputise for the operational lead, which will include liaising with Fetal Medicine and Clinical Genetics colleagues.
The postholder will be expected to interpret and authorize complex reports from a range of techniques including QF-PCR, microarray, karyotyping, chromosome breakage analysis and FISH. Dependent on experience the postholder would also support whole genome sequencing and analysis of embryos for preimplantation genetics testing (PGT).
The postholder will manage staff within the team in order to deliver high quality genomics tests and support the development of the service.
The role offers flexibility with a hybrid working model, allowing a mix of onsite and remote working.

Main duties of the job
Clinical Service Provision:
- To provide high level expertise in the assignment, analysis, interpretation, reporting and authorising of cytogenomic tests and reports.
- Provide advice to scientists and clinicians on best practice, patient diagnosis and prognosis. Provide expert scientific advice at MDTs and other meetings.
Research and Development:
- To plan and deliver strategic developments and develop supporting business cases and grant applications.
- To participate in national and international meetings.
Operational Management:
- To participate in the planning and delivery of a high quality and efficient service.
- To deputise for the Operational Lead in their absence.
- To contribute to the development and delivery of a clear operational plan, achieving relevant quality and safety standards, reporting times and activity levels within budget.
- To provide regular progress reports on the delivery of an accurate, modern and efficient diagnostic service.
- To support the Operational Lead in ensuring that relevant operating procedures are compliant with ISO 15189 guidelines and that national / best practice standards are met.
- To implement measures for cost improvement and cost effectiveness.
- To be responsible for HR management, including recruitment and appraisals of relevant staff.
- To take an active role in quality management, both internal and external, and training and education, in collaboration with other key members of these teams.

The South East Genomics Laboratory Hub (SEGLH)
SEGLH is one of seven hubs that are commissioned to provide genomics services within England and is itself responsible for delivering genomic testing across South East England with a population of approximately 8.4 million.
The SEGLH is led by the Synnovis Genomics laboratory based at Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and is made up of a consortium of laboratory providers in the South London, Kent, Surrey and Sussex region.
Synnovis is a pathology partnership between SYNLAB UK and Ireland, and the NHS, including sites, Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, to deliver and transform pathology services across South East London.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post holder will be responsible for issuing diagnostic clinical reports in a number of cytogenomic service areas, which may include QF-PCR, G-banded chromosome analysis, chromosome breakage studies, fluorescence in situ hybridisation and microarray.
The post holder will be expected to provide specialist advice and guidance to clinicians and other members of staff. They will be responsible for ensuring service work is carried out to a high standard and reports are issued within clinically relevant turnaround times.
As a member of the Prenatal and Reproductive Genomics leadership team, consisting of both scientific and technical leads, the post holder will assist the Operational Lead, deputise in their absence and have overall responsibility for the day to day management of specific service areas.
They will manage a team of Clinical Scientists, overseeing the training and development for these staff and help to oversee the leadership of the technical team in partnership with laboratory technical leads and laboratory managers.
At Synnovis, we are currently shaping the future of pathology services by creating a world-leading Hub and Spoke pathology network with our NHS partners. A large part of this modernisation will involve moving 70% of our services to a purpose built, state of the art Hub laboratory in the heart of London. For now, the job you are applying for will be based at one of our hospital sites however, from 1 April 2024 our people and services will start to move to our Hub laboratory in Blackfriars, Southwark, SE1, with some work remaining in refurbished essential services laboratories across our hospital network, focusing on the rapid turnover of urgent tests. Qualifications
- BSc in appropriate biological science.
- HCPC Clinical Scientist registration in Genetics.
- FRCPath Part 1 or demonstrable experience of working at the level described in the job description.
- Higher degree in Biological Science.
- FCR Path Part 2.
Experience
- Experience of analysis, interpretation and writing clinical diagnostic reports for one or more of the following technologies: karyotype, QF-PCR, microarray, NGS.
- Experience of personnel management.
- Wide experience of both routine and specialised laboratory techniques, to include validation and troubleshooting.
- Experience of working with a multidisciplinary team.
- Experience of working in prenatal diagnosis.
- Experience of laboratory leadership.
- Experience of authorising clinical diagnostic reports for one of more of the following areas: karyotype, QF-PCR, microarray, NGS.
- Experience of performing health and safety and quality audits.
