This post offers an exciting opportunity to become part of the Critical Care Severe Acute Respiratory Failure Team. In December 2011, the Trust was successfully commissioned as one of the 5 severe respiratory failure centres in the UK able to provide ECMO, with responsibility for patients with severe respiratory failure across the South of England and, during times of significant demand, the entire UK and Europe.

ECMO is the most advanced form of respiratory support and requires a dedicated team of specially trained health professionals to provide 24-hour patient care.

Closing date: 22nd July 2025

Interview date: 6th August 2025

You will be responsible for the safe retrieval of patients from other intensive care units, whether on conventional ventilators or ECMO. If mobile ECMO is required, you will travel with the team to the other ICU and assist with placing the patient on ECMO prior to transfer.

You will also receive training in other advanced aspects of severe acute respiratory management, including alternative modes of ventilation and patient management strategies.

We will provide you with the knowledge and skills needed to manage these challenging patients through a combination of theoretical and practical teaching sessions, supported by a competency-based training programme and opportunities to attend national and international conferences.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust comprises five of the UK’s most well-known hospitals – Guy’s, St Thomas’, Evelina London Children’s Hospital, Royal Brompton, and Harefield – along with community services in Lambeth and Southwark. The Trust has a long history of high-quality care, clinical excellence, research, and innovation.

With around 22,700 staff, we are one of the largest NHS Trusts in the country and a major local employer. We aim to reflect the diversity of the communities we serve and continue to develop partnerships with local people, patients, NHS organizations, local authorities, charitable bodies, and GPs.

Our goal is to recruit and retain the best staff, as the dedication and skills of our employees are central to our high-quality, safe, patient-focused services.
