Highly Specialised Echocardiographer

Works autonomously within the ECHO Department. Reporting and scanning patients. This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Physiologist to support the expansion of the Stress ECHO service as well as supporting other exciting developments like the Physiologist Led Valve Clinic. The Physiologist will also have the opportunity to take part in Clinical Trials and produce Clinical papers and present them at Meetings.

Main duties of the job

Applicants must be highly motivated, well organised, flexible and reliable. The Physiologist should be able to demonstrate expertise in advanced techniques within ECHO including 3D and strain. Also capable of running the day to day lists including ward portables.

There is some requirement for ward discharge echoes at the weekend on a rota basis.

Extra duties are mandatory; this may include certain projects and audits.

Job responsibilities

Should demonstrate high level of clinical and technical expertise in Echocardiography. Proven competence in performing and reporting echocardiography studies at independent level as well as Adult BSE accreditation (or equivalent) is mandatory. Previous experience providing support with Stress Echo, TOE and research would be an advantage.

Must be a highly self‑motivated, well organised, flexible and reliable. Should be able to demonstrate expertise in advanced techniques in echocardiography and be enthusiastic to both teach and learn within the field of echocardiography.

Takes individual clinical decisions regarding cardiac ultrasound readings and, along with reviewing the patient’s clinical history, liaises with senior medical staff (Consultants) to explain reasons for the requirement for medical treatment or intervention.

To play a role in the continuing professional development and overall performance of all staff in the Echo Cardiology department and as a potential member of a range of Trust quality/process improvement project groups.

Person Specification

Knowledge/Qualifications

  • BSc in Clinical Physiology, Immediate Life Support (ILS – minimum). -ASCST Parts I & II or equivalent RCCP registered. –All staff are expected to take responsibility for their own continual personal development –Adult BSE accreditation
  • Certificate in Management Studies or equivalent. IT qualification.

Skills

  • Technical skills enabling measurement and analysis of physiological parameters. Ability to work as a member of a team. Ability to think clearly and act appropriately in emergency situations. Self‑motivating. Training skills. –Understands the use of word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software.
  • Empathy with both staff and patients. Understanding of other peoples/department’s needs.

Experience

  • Extensive experience in a wide range of invasive and non-invasive techniques involved in the assessment and therapy provision for patients with cardiac disease. -Previous work experience in performing and reporting transthoracic echo at independent level -Experience in teaching, presentation.
  • Some experience in other speciality procedure(s) involving reporting and/or therapy prescription.
