Join us at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. We have a permanent opportunity for Deputy Sister/Charge Nurse on Hillyers Ward (Band 6).

What is Hillyers Ward?

  • High Consequence Infectious Disease (HCID) Treatment Centre: forming one of six UK specialist centres.
  • Our newly refurbished (2021) HCID unit provides expert specialist care to HCID patients, both within our local and UK-wide population.
  • A Specialist Infectious Diseases Unit: 17 inpatient beds (HIV/TB care), 15 of which are en-suite single laminar flow rooms.
  • Dermatology, Renal, Lupus and General Medical care provided, forming an important component of our in-patient remit.

Applicants must hold SSSAP, mentorship or equivalent course. Main duties of the job:

  • The Deputy Ward Sister role is integral in providing and contributing to stable and safe leadership within Acute and General Medicine.
  • The duties and responsibilities of the post holder include Clinical and Managerial Leadership, Clinical expertise with commitment to excellent standards of patient care, People Management, Training and Education, supporting and leading the team in all areas of compliance and governance whilst utilising proficient communication skills to support our patients and staff.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities:

  • Provide strong clinical leadership skills, supporting, energising, inspiring and empowering others in pursuit of a shared vision to ensure the effective management of the ward/department.
  • Assist and support the Sister/Charge Nurse in the establishment of an efficient working environment, making the most effective and efficient use of staff, supplies and services.
  • In co-ordinating the day-to-day management of the clinical area, delegates duties and care appropriately, whilst maintaining overall responsibility.
  • Ensure that staffing and skill mix is maintained, at all times, to a level that does not compromise patient safety.
  • Responsible for the assessment and subsequent ordering of bank and agency staff within the clinical area including being an authorised signatory for temporary staff.
  • Be involved in the development, assessment and implementation of guidelines, protocols and pathways.
  • Deputise for the Sister/Charge Nurse in their absence.
  • Attend and participate in monthly departmental meetings and ward rounds in the absence of the Sister/Charge Nurse.
  • Help to promote new ideas and methods for the delivery of care and assist in their implementation through liaison and co-operation with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Participate in the development of care pathways to promote uniformity of care.
  • Apply the Directorate and corporate Clinical Governance strategies to the clinical area.
  • Deal with complaints in a calm and courteous manner, ensuring that wherever possible complaints are dealt with efficiently and satisfactorily and resolved locally.
  • Support the Sister/Charge Nurse implement local initiatives within the area.
  • When required to be involved with managing local projects within the area.
  • Understand and participate in the procedure for ordering supplies as required with the agreed budget and to ensure the appropriate use of resources.
  • Responsible for maintaining stock control controlled drugs.
  • Authorisation to sign Bank and Agency staff time-sheets.

Person specification:

Experience:
  • Proven experience of managing a ward; including management of rotas managing competencies, resources and staff.
  • Experience of teaching/assessing/supervising others in a clinical setting.
  • Experience of supporting recruitment campaigns and undertaking interviews.
Skills:
  • Ability to organise and plan own time and that of junior staff and learners.
  • Up to date knowledge of current clinical and professional issues.
  • Good communication skills and ability to deal with sensitive information, including dealing with distressed relatives, care of terminally ill & other challenging situations.
Knowledge:
  • BSC/1st degree (health related) or equivalent qualification/training and experience.
  • Post registration course relevant to the speciality.
  • Mentorship/Teaching Qualification.
