Job summary
The post holder will provide infection support for the Guy\βs hospital site as part of a rotation that supports routine clinical infection work at Guy\βs, the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals. The clinical Infection sub-specialties at Guy\βs include infections in patients with cancer, renal transplant and urology services, a well-established OPAT team, and a regional centre for complex elective orthopaedic/spinal services with involvement from the regional Thoracic, Head and Neck, ENT and Urology groups. Individual consultants will develop their own areas of specialist expertise over time and will deliver ward-based infection consults/telephone advice, multi-disciplinary clinical meetings and ward rounds, ID outpatient clinics and a potential new OPAT service for RBHH sites. Support to the Infection Sciences laboratory services and CCT in Microbiology or Virology is expected, along with induction and training of StRs rotating in via postgraduate teaching. The post holder will develop local clinical guidelines, manage outbreaks, and deliver key performance with a focus on antimicrobial stewardship (bacterial and fungal). All consultants will have PA allocation for specific responsibilities (e.g., antimicrobial stewardship, IPC, OPAT). The role includes participation in a non-resident on-call rota.
Main duties of the job
Each post-holder will have a rotational post across at least two of the RB&H and Guy\βs sites. The role may be tailored to the interests of the post holders, provided they meet core service needs and are agreed with other consultants. The post holder should be prepared to work at any additional or different location owned or served by the Trust, on an ongoing or temporary basis as required.
Induction, accommodation and development
Induction: There will be a personalised induction programme for the Microbiology and clinical Infectious Diseases service, tailored to the needs of the successful candidate.
Accommodation and equipment: The Consultant will have access to an appropriate workspace and clerical support. Library and online journal access are available on site, with libraries/learning zones at the Brompton and Harefield sites.
Continuing professional development (CPD) and Appraisal: The post holder is expected to participate in CPD. Up to 30 days of professional and study leave over three years are available (roughly 10 days per year). Statutory and Mandatory training must be completed within the leave allocation. Funds to support CPD activities may be available via the Post-graduate Centre. Annual appraisal and GMC Specialist Revalidation are required.
Mentoring: An active mentoring and coaching scheme is available; new consultants are encouraged to participate in the New Consultants Forum with organised seminars.
Job Planning: The post is planned to include 10 Programmed Activities (PA) per week, primarily at one site at a time. The exact plan varies by site and is negotiated with the Clinical Director and Service Leads. Applications for additional or different responsibilities can be considered to reflect service needs.
Type of work and timetable
The timetable is an example outline based on 10 PAs per week and may be adjusted. An example timetable with daily activities and potential on-call commitments is provided and will be finalised on appointment and reviewed annually. Some staff may be asked to work flexible hours across evenings or weekends and at different Trust sites as service needs require.
On Call Rota
The appointee will participate in a 1 in 5 ID/Microbiology on-call rota in year one (depending on site: GSTT or RBHH) to authorise and communicate significant laboratory results and provide specialist clinical advice. After year one, there may be an opportunity to join a rota for rare HCID admissions at St Thomasβ. Category A describes on-call requirements where urgent work may require on-site return. Frequency and salary supplements are determined by the rota category and frequency schedule.

Professional Qualifications
- Full and Specialist GMC Registration and current licence to practise.
- UK-trained applicants must also hold a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by interview date. Non-UK trained applicants must evidence UK CCT equivalence.
- On GMC Specialist Register for Microbiology OR Microbiology and Infectious Diseases OR Virology.
- Desirable: MRCP or equivalent; FRCPath or equivalent.
Clinical Experience
- Essential: comprehensive experience across adult infectious diseases; experience in writing clinical infection and/or laboratory guidelines; working knowledge of Infection Prevention and Control, including outbreaks management and antimicrobial stewardship.
- Desirable: expert OPAT knowledge; leading or managing a diagnostic laboratory.
Clinical Skills
- Essential: operating an Infectious Diseases clinical consult service and contributing to multidisciplinary clinical meetings.
- Desirable: clinical assessment and management of Critical Care patients.
Audit Management & IT
- Essential: track record in clinical governance, audit, service development and management; IT skills; evidence of leading service development and quality improvement projects in clinical and/or laboratory services.
Research, Teaching skill & experience
- Essential: experience of teaching and training undergraduates, postgraduates and junior medical staff.
- Desirable: track record of research, publications and understanding of Research ethics.
Leadership / Management skills
- Essential: accountability; ability to lead, make decisions and exercise appropriate authority.
