This is an exciting opportunity to join a thriving chaplaincy department working across 5 London NHS Hospitals, community healthcare and private healthcare, and the London Fire Brigade. The department of spiritual healthcare (chaplaincy) facilitates a safe, appropriate, and confidential service of spiritual, pastoral, ethical, cultural and religious care for 3 million patients, their families and friends and nearly 24,000 members of staff.

The post holder will be a key member of the chaplaincy team striving to fulfil this aim of providing spiritual care to patients, visitors, and staff, irrespective of their religion or belief. The post holder will be particularly responsible for supporting Muslim patients and staff within the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals (1 day each), and for generic spiritual care support in one or more clinical areas under the direction of the senior chaplains.

Main duties of the job

To conduct services of public worship if required in the hospital, in accordance with their own religious tradition and ecumenically as required, to administer faith community rites and practices to patients on the wards, and to otherwise provide for people who are unable to remain in contact with their faith community. To advise, or to seek advice, on all spiritual aspects of bereavement (pre and post death) care and funerals. To take part in or lead such memorial services and other corporate or public events as the trust requires.

As part of team, to offer cover for religious and spiritual needs, specifically, overnight generic on-call each week as deemed necessary by the Department of Spiritual Care.

To be available where opportunity arises to co-operate in the training of students, and to try and ensure all new members of Trust staff are familiar with the workings of the Department of Spiritual Care.

To be able to offer such training to the Trust as required for their own particular faith community and be willing to be trained in order to offer specialised training in spiritual, ethical, cultural, and multi-faith issues.

Job responsibilities

  • Offer spiritual and emotional support to Muslim patients and their families.
  • Provide religious care including prayer support, Quranic recitation, and advice on Islamic practices in healthcare settings.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues from different faiths and backgrounds.
  • Support staff in navigating faith-related concerns and ensuring inclusive care.
  • Participate in regular meetings and contribute to the development of inclusive chaplaincy services.
  • A practicing Muslim with appropriate religious endorsement or certification.
  • Experience in chaplaincy, pastoral care, or community religious leadership.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work empathetically with people of all faiths and none.
  • Understanding of healthcare environments and sensitivity to patient care.

Person Specification

Knowledge/Qualifications

  • MA or post-graduate qualification in Healthcare Chaplaincy or equivalent
  • Recognised Islamic theological qualification, authorisation/licence to minister from an accountable agency/ organisation in the UK
  • Additional counselling or pastoral training

Previous Experience

  • A good understanding of Health Care Chaplaincy in the context of NHS
  • Experience of delivering pastoral, spiritual and religious care in a healthcare setting
  • Knowledge and understanding of national policies and procedures relevant to healthcare Chaplaincy

Skills (Leading Prayers)

  • Ability to lead prayers from recognised or accredited faith or belief community
  • Experience of delivering pastoral, spiritual and religious care
