The Graduate Materials Engineer will be based at the Newport, Isle of Wight facility for the duration of the 1 year graduate programme, reporting to the BU Technical Support Manager with a day-to-day functional reporting line to the UK Site Manager. The role involves significant laboratory work, including the manufacture of test coupons and the completion of analytical testing to generate robust market data on epoxy adhesives and resins. The individual will work closely with colleagues across the Newport site to develop a strong understanding of the epoxy adhesives and resins business, its products, and underlying technologies. In addition, the role will provide technical support to sales teams, contributing to technical discussions on our products and undertaking occasional travel to customer sites as required. Structured training will be provided throughout the programme, with regular guidance and support from a designated training owner during key development phases.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Laboratory Testing & Data Generation
- Manufacture composite test coupons in line with defined standards and procedures
- Conduct analytical testing on materials
- Accurate recording, analysing, and interpreting test results
- Technical Analysis & Reporting
- Prepare technical reports summarising test outcomes and key findings
- Support the generation of product data sheets and technical documentation
- Develop knowledge of epoxy adhesives and resins, materials, and technologies
- Understand how products are used in marine, industrial and wind applications
- Technical Support Activities
- Provide first‑line support to internal teams (sales, operations, product development)
- Assist in troubleshooting product or process issues
- Cross‑Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with lab, product development, operations, quality, and technical support teams
- Participate in team meetings and project reviews
- Customer & Commercial Support
- Support sales teams in technical discussions on products
- Participate in occasional customer visits to support product applications (where required)
- Complete structured practical training in testing methods, materials, and systems in respect of our adhesives and resins ranges with production and process engineering.
- Complete individual technical projects and create test plans to provide suitable market data.
- Gain an understanding of competing products available in the composites and adhesives market.
Skills & Experience
- Degree level qualification in engineering or other physical science.
- Experience of composite materials is desirable, but not essential.
- Previous experience of industry is desirable, e.g., university placements or summer employment.
- Strong understanding of materials science principles (particularly composites, adhesives, resins).
- Confidence and ability to give professional presentations.
- Ability to analyse, review and report information in a concise and easily understandable format.
- Ability to work effectively with cross‑functional teams (lab, production, quality, sales, etc.).
