The Senior Compliance Officer is based in our London office and is part of the Ethics & Sustainability Department.

Overview

The Senior Compliance Officer serves as both a senior advisor and control function within the ABC (Anti-Bribery & Corruption) Compliance team, helping ensure that business activities comply with anti-bribery, anti-money laundering and due diligence requirements. The role combines technical compliance expertise, risk assessment, stakeholder advice, quality assurance and the continuous improvement of the compliance framework. The Senior Compliance Officer supports the Anti-Bribery and Corruption Compliance function through day-to-day counterparty and business analysis, as well as the implementation, testing, monitoring and enhancement of the ABC framework. The role has a Group-level remit, supporting ABC Compliance needs globally and working closely with business stakeholders and functions including Sanction, Legal, Finance, Credit, HR and Internal Audit.

Main Responsibilities

  • Implement and administer core controls for counterparty due diligence, anti-bribery and corruption, and anti-money laundering procedures, including leading, overseeing and conducting due diligence reviews.
  • Conduct due diligence on high-risk and complex counterparties, including those related to M&A and joint ventures, while supporting escalations from junior compliance analysts and performing quality checks on their work.
  • Identify, assess and mitigate ABC and AML-related risks, including through risk assessments, business and counterparty analysis, and appropriate corrective action plans.
  • Contribute to control testing and monitoring activities to assess the effectiveness of ABC Compliance controls and support the continuous enhancement of the ABC framework.
  • Provide practical compliance guidance and education to stakeholders, including trading desks and management, and promote the consistent application of the ABC framework globally.
  • Assist the Regional Head of ABC Compliance EMEA and the Global Head of Ethics & Sustainability with strategic projects, including special reviews and control enhancement initiatives.
  • Contribute to the design and administration of the ABC Compliance training curriculum.
  • Support cross-jurisdictional and cross-departmental initiatives, including projects with HR, Legal, Finance and Internal Audit, related to the prevention, mitigation and detection of ABC compliance risks.

Profile

  • University degree, e.g. Law, Economics, Political Science, Government or a related discipline. Compliance / KYC certifications are a plus.
  • 10+ years of compliance experience, preferably within the commodity trading business, with an oil major, or within the financial services / banking industry. Alternatively, experience conducting complex due diligence reviews or investigations in the banking or legal sector, on behalf of a regulator, or with due diligence service providers.
  • Experience working in a highly dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Experience managing multiple projects and stakeholders simultaneously.
  • Strong KYC and due diligence expertise, with the ability to guide junior team members, handle escalations and perform quality checks.
  • Excellent organisational and analytical skills, with strong attention to detail.
  • Rigorous, process-driven and goal-oriented approach.
  • Proven communication and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate and conduct training at all levels of the company and interact effectively with trading desks and management.
  • Strong internal control orientation and the ability to support the development of a strong compliance culture.
  • Experience working with remote teams.
  • A collaborative team player willing to support others in achieving common goals.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently and to self-manage competing projects and deadlines.
  • Proactive and stress-tolerant, with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to change with optimism.
  • Ability to travel at a moderate frequency.
  • Fluent in English, both written and oral. Other languages are a plus.
