At the Guide Dogs we have a hands-on facilities and maintenance role supporting the safe, compliant, and efficient operation of buildings, grounds, and vehicles. The role suits someone with practical maintenance experience, strong health and safety awareness, and a proactive approach to facilities support.

SALARY: £23,000 - £25,000 per annum + Excellent Benefits

WORKING HOURS: 35 Hours per Week - Monday to Friday, 9am – 5pm
We have a fantastic new job opportunity for a General Building Repairs Maintenance Operative to support the day-to-day upkeep of a busy operational site. This role plays a key part in ensuring buildings, grounds, and facilities are safe, accessible, and well maintained.
As a General Building Repairs Maintenance Operative you will carry out reactive repairs, planned preventative maintenance, and routine checks while working closely with facilities colleagues and external contractors to maintain high standards. The role requires a practical, organised, and safety-conscious individual who can prioritise workloads effectively, maintain accurate records, and contribute positively to the overall site environment.
Duties
- Reactive Maintenance: Completing repairs and maintenance tasks in line with site procedures and risk priorities
- Planned Preventative Maintenance: Undertaking scheduled maintenance activities and statutory checks
- Health And Safety Compliance: Working safely at all times and escalating concerns appropriately
- Contractor Liaison: Coordinating, supervising, and supporting external contractors on site
- Maintenance Administration: Raising requisitions, sourcing materials, and maintaining accurate records
- Budget Awareness: Identifying cost-effective solutions while maintaining quality and compliance
- Building Systems Support: Developing a working understanding of site systems and technical documentation
- Fleet Oversight: Checking and maintaining site pool vehicles to ensure roadworthiness
- Grounds And External Areas: Supporting contractors to keep external spaces safe, clean, and well maintained
Candidate Requirements
Essential
- Previous experience in a maintenance, facilities, or site support role
- Knowledge of health and safety procedures within a maintenance environment
- Experience carrying out basic repairs across buildings, grounds, or equipment
- Ability to prioritise tasks based on urgency and risk
- Confident communication skills for working with colleagues and contractors
- A practical, hands-on approach with good problem-solving skills
- Basic IT skills for record keeping and reporting
- Eligibility to work in the UK
Desirable
- Experience supporting planned preventative maintenance schedules
- Knowledge of coordinating or supervising external contractors
- Exposure to fleet, vehicle, or equipment checks
- A background in facilities, estates, or workplace services
