As a SCADA and Control Systems Engineer, you will be responsible for the design, implementation, and maintenance of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems and control systems within the power station and network utility environments.
Your role involves providing technical expertise, supervising engineering resource, and ensuring the efficient and safe operation of control and monitoring systems.
The role is crucial in ensuring the reliable and efficient operation of the control and monitoring systems while maintaining safety and compliance standards.
The post holder is required to support the Senior Operations Engineer in the operational functions of the power station, is crucial in ensuring the reliable and efficient operation of the control and monitoring systems while maintaining safety and compliance standards.
Additionally involves facilitating the commissioning and delivery of capital and operational projects in the Vale Power Station together with the distribution network.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver design and development works associated with the SCADA and control systems, ensuring they meet project requirements and industry standards.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather project specifications and design system architectures.
- Support operations team demonstrating strong knowledge in generation, network and Channel Islands Electricity Grid.
- Manage and oversee SCADA and control system projects from inception to completion.
- Create project plans, allocate resources, and monitor progress to ensure on-time and on-budget delivery
- Integration with various sensors, PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), communication protocols and other control systems such as engine controls into the SCADA network.
- Develop control algorithms and logic to achieve desired outcomes, such as improved efficiency and quality.
- Supervision of engineers and technicians, providing mentorship, training, and guidance when appropriate.
- Plan and execute testing and commissioning activities for SCADA and control systems.
- To verify system functionality, performance, and safety compliance.
- Establish maintenance procedures and schedules to ensure the ongoing reliability of systems.
- Provide technical support and troubleshooting assistance to field personnel.
- Produce clear and detailed reports of activities in asset management systems.
- Implement system upgrades and enhancements as needed.
- To oversee and at times manage both internal maintenance staff or subcontractors.
- Communicate with suppliers and manufacturers for sourcing replacement parts and materials.
- Prioritise safety in all aspects of system design and operation.
- Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards, codes, and regulations.
- Maintain comprehensive documentation for SCADA and control systems, including schematics, wiring diagrams, and software configurations.
- Prepare operation manuals and training materials for end-users and maintenance teams.
- Produce RAMS, toolbox talks and any other health and safety documentation as required.
- Undertake specific engineering support roles as part of project teams on capital projects, to ensure the timely completion of those works.
- Comply with national and local legislation, specifically related to Health & Safety, Equal Opportunities and Data Protection.
- Assist the Senior Operations Engineer with the management of Health and Safety within the team with the implementation of the company’s Health and Safety policies and procedures including the review of policies and procedures relevant to the section.
- Such other duties as may be allocated and interchange of duties as required.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- Requires a theoretical engineering knowledge consistent with HNC in an engineering discipline or equivalent experience, combined with operational experience in a power generation or equivalent industry.
- Proficiency in SCADA software.
- Experience in SCADA and control system design and implementation preferred.
- Knowledge of PLC programming functionality.
- Familiarity with communication protocols (e. g., Modbus, Ethernet/IP).
- Required to train under the Guernsey Electricity E&M Safety Rules.
- Requires high level of competency and experience with computer technology, including Microsoft applications
- Must become certified on any additional training as required such as EEMUA and NEBOSH.
- The post holder must have the ability to understand information from diagrams and manuals.
- The ability to rectify or report faults and abnormalities on the plant and equipment.
- Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
