The Scott Trust Limited, the sole shareholder of Guardian Media Group plc, is seeking a Trustee. The Scott Trust is a unique form of media ownership. Its remit is to secure and preserve the financial position and editorial independence of the Guardian in perpetuity. Profits generated by Guardian Media Group are reinvested to sustain journalism that is free from commercial or political interference. No individual can benefit financially from being a shareholder in The Scott Trust.

About the role

You will bring your expertise, insight, and a strategic mindset to help guide and support the Trust in fulfilling its mission. As a Trustee, you will play a crucial role in overseeing the Trust’s governance and key strategic matters. You’ll provide expert guidance that contributes to the Trust’s future direction, whilst upholding its values and commitments to independent journalism. You will work collaboratively with fellow Trustees, offering independent judgment and constructive challenge. A typical Trustee term consists of two five-year appointments, with meetings held five times per year.

About you

With considerable journalism experience in at least some of the following areas: news, newspaper, video, audio, broadcast, social media, you will have proven experience in a senior board level role, or equivalent, in the public, private or voluntary sector. The successful candidate will also:

  • embody the values of CP Scott; honesty, integrity, courage, fairness, and have a sense of duty to the reader and the community
  • be a committed reader of the Guardian
  • identify with the principles of open, independent, liberal journalism
  • have the ability to think strategically, independently and imaginatively
  • have an understanding of the current global media landscape
