We are looking for a Senior Android Developer to join our Apps team. Development of digital products is central to the Guardian. We create our Android app primarily in Kotlin and Java using Android Studio, focusing on a fast and stable user experience. Our Play Store rating of 4.7 stars reflects our quality focus.
Responsibilities
- Lead on major new features and improvements for The Guardian’s Android apps, including maintaining existing functionality.
- Work primarily in Kotlin (90%+), with possible use of Java as required.
- Collaborate in a strongly team-oriented environment with other developers, designers, product managers, editors, and commercial colleagues.
- Take on leadership roles in projects and help others grow by sharing expertise.
- Contribute to product decisions as well as technical decisions and strive for daily innovation, including during hack days.
About you / Qualifications
- Demonstrated expertise in Android development with strong interest in continuing to grow skills.
- Strong competence in modern Android development tools (e.g., Jetpack Compose, Coroutines/Flow, MVVM, Webviews, Jetpack libraries, modular architectures).
- Experience with various testing approaches (JVM unit testing, instrumented testing, UI regression testing) and a culture of testing.
- Comfort with both cutting-edge technologies and legacy code.
- Experience in or willingness to take on leadership in some team projects.
- Basic awareness of iOS development or curiosity to learn (Swift/Objective-C) and/or server-side languages (Scala/Typescript) can be useful.
Hybrid working and location
We operate in a hybrid environment: 1 day per week in our Kings Cross office and 4 days remotely. If you’d like to come in more, that’s welcome too.
Salary
Salary for the Guardian Senior Android Developer role is £82,000 per year.
