Responsibilities

  • Work on major new features, as well as improving and maintaining existing functionality for The Guardian's Android apps.
  • Build and test major new features and maintain existing code, working 90%+ in Kotlin (with occasional Java).
  • Collaborate with other developers, designers, product managers, editorial and commercial colleagues, and iOS, server‑side, and web engineers.
  • Take on a leadership role in team projects, guiding and encouraging others to grow.
  • Make product and technical decisions, and contribute to the technical direction of the team.
  • Participate in hack days and strive for innovative solutions on a daily basis.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated expertise in Android development with a strong interest in continuous learning.
  • Strong competence with modern Android tools and libraries such as Jetpack Compose, Coroutines/Flow, MVVM, WebViews, Jetpack libraries, and modular app architectures.
  • Experience writing and promoting a culture of testing, including unit, instrumented, and UI regression tests.
  • Comfortable working with both cutting‑edge technologies and legacy codebases.
  • Willingness to take on a leadership role in team projects.
  • Basic understanding of iOS development (interest in learning Swift and Objective‑C) or familiarity with Scala and TypeScript for server‑side development is useful.
