Translate complex datasets into clear, accessible charts, graphs, and visual narratives for a variety of audiences. Design and develop interactive, visually compelling dashboards and reports. Ensure data accuracy, consistency, and integrity. Communicate data visualisation concepts and visual approach rationale to technical and non-technical audiences using industry-standard tools. Stay informed on emerging trends and best practices in data visualisation and design, applying improvements where relevant.
Responsibilities
- Demonstrated experience in data visualisation, including designing and implementing data-rich interfaces, dashboards, or analytical tools that help users understand and act on information.
- Implement data visualisations in code or work closely with engineers to bring visual designs into production (including charts, dashboards, prototypes, and interactive experiences).
- Familiarity with charting libraries such as Highcharts or D3.js or platforms such as Tableau.
- Communicate and collaborate effectively to explain data visualisation concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Awareness of current trends and best practices in data visualisation design, accessibility, and user experience.
- Contribute to our in-house analytics platform, Ophan, and data products across the wider ecosystem, balancing user needs, technical considerations, and business goals.
Stack and Tools
Ophan uses TypeScript and React on the frontend, with Highcharts for charting. BigQuery, Tableau, and Alation are used across the data landscape. Skills are transferable; familiarity with specific technologies is not required.
About the Role
We are looking for a Data Visualisation Engineer to join the Data team. This role enhances our in-house data platforms by combining visualisation expertise, data storytelling, and user-centred design to help people better understand and act on data. You will help improve how people interact with our newsroom analytics platform, Ophan, and contribute to the design and experience of data products across our wider ecosystem. The role balances user needs, technical considerations, and business goals. The position is based in a modern newsroom environment with transferable data-challenge design patterns across data-rich digital products and organisations. We operate in a hybrid environment: 3 days a week in Kings Cross offices and 2 days remote.
