We are now looking for an iOS Engineer to join our Apps Experience team. We build the Guardian iOS app primarily in Swift. With 4.8+ star reviews, one of the UK's top 12 news apps on the App Store, and handpicked by Apple’s editorial team for its Editor’s Choice collection, we're trusted by millions of readers to deliver a fast, reliable and accessible experience.
As an iOS Engineer you'll build and maintain features, taking ownership of the delivery of appropriately scoped pieces of work from design through to release with the support of your team.
About the role
You'll be building and testing major new features, as well as improving and maintaining existing functionality. Our programming language of choice is Swift, and we now build all new features exclusively using SwiftUI, but you’ll occasionally work with legacy code in Objective-C. You won't be coding in isolation - our culture is strongly collaborative, whether pair programming with other developers or working closely with designers, editorial and commercial colleagues. Sometimes deciding what code to write is as hard as writing the code itself. As an engineer you'll be involved in product decisions as well as technical ones. You'll be reviewing the code of other engineers to ensure we maintain our app's high standard. You'll contribute to technical discussions and help evolve our architecture and engineering practices. You’ll collaborate closely with product managers, designers and fellow engineers to deliver high-quality user experiences. You'll strive to be innovative on a daily basis, as well as at our regular hack days. For example, a recent hack day saw the iOS team develop a new home screen widget using SwiftUI, which has now been shipped to the App Store.
About you
- Experience developing iOS applications in Swift, with a good understanding of modern iOS development using SwiftUI and UIKit and Apple's core frameworks.
- The ability to independently deliver well-scoped features, producing high-quality, maintainable code and taking responsibility for your work from development through to release.
- An understanding of software design principles and a willingness to contribute to architectural discussions, learning from and collaborating with more experienced engineers on complex technical challenges.
- A collaborative approach to working with product managers, designers and fellow engineers, communicating effectively and contributing positively to the team's success.
- Curiosity and a desire to continually develop your technical skills, improve the developer experience, and contribute ideas that enhance our products and ways of working.
- An appreciation for cross-functional collaboration, enjoying working with Android and backend engineers to deliver a consistent experience across platforms. Familiarity with Kotlin for Android, or Scala and Typescript for server side development is useful, but not essential.
We actively encourage applications from groups traditionally underrepresented in the UK media. Our engineers and developers operate in a hybrid environment working 1 day a week from our offices in Kings Cross and 4 days a week remotely. We strive for salary transparency wherever possible. The salary band for new iOS Developers starts at 62,000 per annum. We value and respect all differences (seen and unseen) in all people. We aspire to have inclusive working experiences and an environment that reflects the audience we serve, where our people have equal access to career development opportunities, their voices are heard and can contribute to our future. We actively encourage applications from people of all backgrounds. Many of our staff work flexibly and we will consider all requests for flexible working arrangements.
How to apply
To apply please upload your CV. We don’t require a cover letter, but we do ask a question related to iOS development as part of the application. The question should take no more than 5 minutes to answer, but please factor in the extra time when applying. We appreciate the time taken to prepare each application we receive. We do not use AI-assisted technology to review applications; every application is reviewed by a member of our recruitment team. Thank you for bearing with us during the screening process. The closing date for applications is Friday 25th September 2026.
