We seek an enthusiastic, driven individual to take on the financial management of the company. GUARD Archaeology is an ambitious company with a strong position in a competitive market and the successful candidate will help us continue to deliver our services to the highest industry standards and to build on our success in the commercial archaeology sector.
Job Purpose
To oversee the financial health of the company in a pivotal role responsible for and managing day-to-day financial operations, producing accurate management information, reviewing and maintaining financial controls, and supporting strategic decision-making, reporting directly to the directors.
Key Responsibilities
- Management & Financial Accounts: Prepare and finalise quarterly management accounts, including P&L and balance sheet with commentary for board meetings.
- Cash Flow & Treasury: Monitor cash flow and produce forecasts when required.
- Budgeting & Forecasting: Assist with the annual budgeting process and produce reforecasts based on business performance. Monitor sales invoicing forecast and liaise with project managers on updates.
- Operational Finance: Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable and sales invoicing. Provide reports monthly to directors. Work closely with management team in the preparation of monthly invoices. Prepare monthly payroll re travel, overtime and sickness calculations with director oversight. Review and prepare staff expenses for payment.
- Controls & Compliance: Ensure compliance with statutory regulations (HMRC, etc.) and maintain robust internal controls to mitigate risk. Liaise with external accountants on statutory accounts and ad hoc technical and compliance matters.
- Commercial Support: Work closely with directors to review profitability and provide financial data for decision-making.
- Team Leadership: Supervise small team including Finance Administrator.
Candidate Requirements
- Qualification: Fully qualified (AAT, ACCA, ICAS) or qualified by experience with a strong track record.
- Experience: 3+ years in a similar role, with specific experience working in a fast-paced SME environment.
- Technical Skills: Strong proficiency in accounting software (e.g. Sage) and advanced Excel skills.
- Soft Skills: Proactive & Hands-on: Ability to "hit the ground running" and handle both high-level strategy and detailed transactional work. Communication: Excellent communication skills to explain complex financial information to non-financial stakeholders. Problem-solving: Analytical mindset with a focus on process improvement.
Typical Working Conditions & Remuneration
- Structure: Managing a very small team.
- Location: Glasgow office-based (with options for occasional home-working where feasible).
- Salary/Benefits: Subject to experience (£40k-£45k) plus pension, and income-tax free bonus on qualification as EOT member. 30 days paid leave. Free secure parking. Employee Assistance Programme provided to all staff coupled with line manager support.
