Principal RF Engineer | Defence Electronics | South West Midlands
Most RF engineers never find out where their designs end up. Here, you’ll know exactly. My client designs RF and electronic systems for defence and security customers, and their products are deployed operationally across the world, protecting people in some of the most demanding environments there are.
They’re an established, R&D-led defence electronics business with a strong track record and secure long-term backing. The engineering team is small and hands-on, so you’ll own designs from concept through to production rather than handling a slice of someone else’s.
They’re looking for a Principal RF Engineer to become the company’s technical authority for RF and microwave.
What you’ll do
- Design broadband RF and microwave circuits from low MHz to beyond 10 GHz
- Lead work on wideband power amplifiers, LNAs, filters, couplers and complete RF front ends
- Design frequency conversion architectures, including up/down-converters, image rejection and LO distribution
- Build the supporting electronics: low-noise and switch-mode supplies, PA bias and protection, microcontroller control
- Characterise designs in the lab with VNAs, spectrum analysers, signal generators and power meters
- Take products through prototype, verification and into manufacture
- Mentor graduate and junior engineers and help shape the technology roadmap
What you’ll bring
- A degree in Electronic Engineering, RF Engineering, Physics or similar
- Significant RF/microwave design experience in defence, aerospace or a related industry
- Proven broadband PA and frequency conversion design experience
- A strong grasp of matching networks, S-parameters, stability analysis, linearity and high-power RF techniques
- Hands-on use of AWR Microwave Office and Altium Designer
- Strong lab skills and clear technical writing
Nice to have
- EW, radar or comms system experience
- Embedded C/C++ and Python test automation (SCPI/VISA)
- EMC, environmental qualification and military standards
- Your designs protect lives, and you’ll see them in service
- A senior role with genuine technical authority and influence over future products
- Stability and investment without the bureaucracy of a large prime
- A countryside location with lower living costs, commutable from Worcester, Hereford, Gloucester and Cheltenham
Permanent role. You’ll need to be able to obtain and maintain UK security clearance.
