The Future Technologies team leads research, development and innovation activity across the business, focusing on Diversification, Decarbonisation and Digital. Workstreams include generative AI, modular battery systems, hydrogen fuel cells, reality capture, additive manufacturing, drones and rail vehicle power.

As a Future Technologies Engineer, you will deliver research, prototyping and proof-of-concept activities across multiple technical domains, taking ideas from concept through to demonstrators, business cases and deployment. The role suits someone who is adaptable, hands‑on and comfortable working in a fast‑paced innovation environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver research, prototyping and demonstration activities across multiple innovation workstreams.
  • Work across at least two strategic pillars: Diversification, Decarbonisation and Digital.
  • Build prototypes, run simulations, analyse data and produce concise technical reports and recommendations.
  • Apply appropriate tools including Python, CAD, AI and standard engineering analysis methods.
  • Support bids, business cases and customer presentations using Future Technologies outputs.
  • Maintain accurate records of costs, benefits, TRL progression and lessons learned.
  • Engage with internal teams, customers, operators, OEMs and industry stakeholders.
  • Contribute ideas into the innovation pipeline and support continuous improvement activities.
  • Mentor junior engineers and maintain ongoing professional development.

Degree in an engineering, science or technology discipline. Strong problem‑solving and communication skills. Ability to work across multiple technical areas and manage discrete work packages independently. Experience in rail, transport or another high‑integrity engineering industry. Knowledge of areas such as: Generative AI and data analysis, Battery, hydrogen or alternative power systems, Reality capture and digital engineering, Additive manufacturing, drones or robotics. Programming and data‑analysis experience, including Python. Experience working in agile or sprint‑based delivery environments. Understanding of Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) and innovation delivery. Experience supporting bids, business cases or technical proposals. Approximately three years of post‑graduate industry experience.
