The Chief Engineer is responsible for the safe, compliant, and efficient maintenance, operation, and continuous improvement of the Company's rail product and engineering systems. The role ensures compliance with ORR, National Rail, and Company standards while delivering high levels of reliability, performance, safety, and cost efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure the product is maintained and operated in accordance with regulatory, industry, and Company standards.
  • Lead preventative and mandatory maintenance planning and delivery.
  • Manage engineering assets, spare parts, stock levels, and maintenance records.
  • Monitor equipment performance and recommend improvements to reliability and efficiency.
  • Develop and manage engineering budgets and control departmental expenditure.
  • Manage contractors, suppliers, project managers, and maintenance partners to ensure effective service delivery.
  • Maintain effective communication with the Entity in Charge of Maintenance (ECM) and other stakeholders.
  • Develop and deliver sustainability and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with Health & Safety legislation, Company policies, and quality standards.

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Lead, develop, and manage the engineering team to achieve operational objectives.
  • Implement and maintain departmental procedures and performance standards.
  • Manage workforce planning, scheduling, performance, and training.
  • Promote employee engagement, continuous learning, and a culture of safety and accountability.
  • Communicate business objectives, targets, and performance metrics effectively.

General Responsibilities

  • Maintain the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and confidentiality.
  • Build effective working relationships across departments and with external partners.
  • Attend required meetings and training programmes.
  • Act as a role model for Company values, policies, and the Code of conduct.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Proven engineering leadership experience within rail, transport, infrastructure, or a similarly regulated environment.
  • Strong knowledge of maintenance management, compliance, asset management, and Health & Safety requirements.
  • Experience managing budgets, contractors, suppliers, and engineering projects.
  • Relevant engineering qualification and professional membership desirable.
