GTG Training are recruiting for an Apprentice Bus and Coach Mechanic on behalf of McGill's Buses. This is a fantastic opportunity for those who are ready to advance their career within the automotive industry. The Modern Apprenticeship Programmes allow apprentices to work full time and earn while they learn putting theory into practice within a training environment. As well as attending the training centre for week block release of training, regular assessment and reviews will be undertaken within the apprentice's own workplace which aims to ensure they have the required skills to successfully complete their apprenticeship.

What Might a Typical Day in this Job look like? You will be based within the garage workshop and will be involved in learning all aspects of vehicle repair and maintenance, including vehicle servicing, MOT preparation, removal, replacement and overhaul of major components and electrical fault diagnostics. Examples of the units covered are:

  • Materials, fabrication, tools and measuring devices used in the automotive environment
  • Inspection of heavy vehicles
  • Diagnosing and rectifying chassis units including pneumatic braking systems and components
  • Diagnosing and rectifying vehicle engine and component faults, vehicle transmission and component faults and vehicle electrical system faults
  • Isolating and re-energising high voltage systems on an electric vehicle
  • Ensuring your own actions reduce risks to health and safety
  • Contributing to workplace good housekeeping

What will I learn? Regular assessment and reviews will be undertaken within the apprentice's own workplace with dedicated mentors from GTG and the apprentice’s workplace, which aims to ensure they have the required skills to successfully complete their apprenticeship. You will train through GTG to SCQF Level 7 in Heavy Goods and Public Service Vehicle Maintenance and Repair.

What qualifications or qualities are required? You must have or expect to gain National 4 or above in English, Maths, and either a Science or Technical Subject.

What personal qualities are required? We are looking for candidates who want to kickstart their career in the automotive industry and who are keen to learn. You must be dedicated and have a proactive approach to your work and learning. You are able to prioritise and work to timelines. A willingness to work in a practical environment using your own initiative. A full UK Driving licence preferred but not essential.
