Our client is seeking a Systems Configuration Analyst to support a major transformation programme involving legacy Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). The role focuses on understanding, documenting, and managing complex system configurations within a long-established traffic systems estate, with particular emphasis on Variable Message Signage (VMS) behaviour and configuration logic. The successful candidate will play a key role in baselining existing system configurations, creating a structured and sustainable approach to configuration management, and supporting the transition to a modernised systems environment. This is not a hands-on technical role. Instead, it requires a high-level analytical professional with strong stakeholder engagement skills and experience working within complex systems and change programmes.
The current traffic systems estate has evolved organically over approximately 30 years and supports a wide range of services critical to the safe operation of the road network, including roadside data collection, CCTV management, journey time monitoring, web-based services, and electronic road signage. As part of an ongoing multi-year transformation programme, the client is seeking to replace ageing platforms and architecture with more contemporary, agile, and cost-effective solutions. A clear understanding of existing system configurations is essential to enable a successful transition.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyse and document configuration data from legacy traffic systems
- Baseline current system configurations, identifying what must be retained, modified, or removed
- Focus on the algorithmic responses and behaviour of Variable Message Signage
- Create and maintain a structured method for storing and managing configuration information
- Translate complex configuration logic into clear, usable documentation
- Work closely with operational teams and systems contractors to gather, validate, and refine information
- Support migration of configuration data into new systems
- Contribute to systems transition and future procurement or tender activities
- Engage effectively with the supply chain, acting as an informed client-side representative
- Manage stakeholders and maintain strong working relationships across technical and non-technical teams
- Support wider systems management and contract oversight activities as required
Essential Experience & Skills
- Demonstrable experience analysing, capturing, and presenting complex information from multiple sources
- Proven ability to design processes and tools for managing systems configuration data
- Strong stakeholder management experience, including advising and supporting senior stakeholders
- Experience working in complex delivery environments with multiple competing priorities
- Contract management experience and a collaborative approach to team working
- High-level knowledge of highways systems, particularly variable message signage or similar technologies
Desirable Experience
- Knowledge of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and their control methods
- Experience with IT architecture and data systems
- Experience supporting systems transition, transformation, or change programmes
- Background in configuration management within long-established or legacy systems
