Role Overview

We are seeking a Senior Learning Experience Designer to design and deliver immersive, high-impact leadership learning experiences as part of a national leadership development programme. This role focuses on translating senior-level insight into practical, scenario-based learning interventions that build leadership capability in complex, operational environments. You will design learning that reflects real-world decision-making across:

  • Safety Performance
  • Customer outcomes
  • Commercial priorities
  • System-wide integration

The emphasis is on behavioural change, not theory — creating learning that feels authentic, applied, and relevant to senior leaders operating in a complex system.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design end-to-end learning interventions including:
    • Leadership modules and session structures
    • Immersive scenarios and simulation-based learning
    • Reflection and application tools for leaders
  • Translate strategic insight and curriculum frameworks into practical learning experiences
  • Co-design content with subject matter experts across operational and corporate functions
  • Develop facilitator guides and delivery materials to ensure consistent, high-quality delivery
  • Ensure all learning aligns with leadership expectations, organisational culture, and inclusive learning principles
  • Support pilot delivery, gather feedback, and iterate designs quickly and effectively
  • Maintain high standards of learning design quality and consistency

Essential Experience

  • 6–10+ years’ experience in Learning Design, LXD, or Instructional Design at a senior level
  • Proven experience designing scenario-based or immersive learning interventions
  • Strong track record of designing behavioural change learning for senior leaders
  • Experience working with senior stakeholders and subject matter experts in complex environments
  • Ability to deliver high-quality outputs at pace

Skills & Capabilities

  • Strong learning experience design craft with ability to create structured, engaging learning journeys
  • Expertise in scenario design, including:
    • Realistic decision points
    • Trade-offs and consequences
    • Operational authenticity
  • Ability to design for facilitation (timing, flow, group dynamics, usability)
  • Clear, accessible communication style with minimal jargon
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing skills
  • Iterative design mindset (prototype, test, refine)

Desirable Experience

  • Experience in rail, transport, infrastructure, or other complex operational sectors
  • Experience designing blended learning programmes (virtual and in-person delivery)
  • Experience supporting organisational transformation or leadership culture change

Working Style

  • Structured, fast-moving, and collaborative
  • Comfortable working with ambiguity and evolving requirements
  • Confident engaging senior stakeholders and challenging assumptions where needed
  • Focused on practical application and real-world impact

What You’ll Deliver

  • Pilot-ready leadership learning modules (slides, guides, materials)
  • Scenario and simulation packs with structured decision-making frameworks
  • Iterated learning assets based on pilot feedback and evaluation
