Job Description
We are seeking a Senior Front-End Developer to join a digital team delivering vital services that support citizens in times of need. This role focuses on building clear, simple, and accessible user interfaces for services used by millions of people across the UK.
You will work with Node.js, Express, React, TypeScript, and templating engines to deliver accessibility-compliant solutions in line with Government Digital Service (GDS) standards. Collaborating with a community of developers, you will contribute to reusable patterns, components, and best practices that benefit multiple teams across the department.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and promote the technical direction of reusable front-end components and patterns.
- Build accessible, user-focused services that work effectively across multiple devices and browsers.
- Collaborate with back-end teams to ensure seamless integration and high standards of delivery.
- Deliver iteratively using test-driven development (TDD/BDD) and participate in agile ceremonies.
- Release, maintain, and support code packages within modern CI/CD environments.
- Mentor and coach colleagues, promoting collaboration, consistency, and best practice.
- Engage with wider engineering and user-centred design communities to share knowledge and drive standards.
Essential Skills & Experience:
- Significant expertise in front-end development of large-scale systems with high transaction volumes and complex business processes.
- Strong working knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, TypeScript, Node.js, and modern front-end frameworks (e.g., React).
- Proven experience building WCAG-compliant, accessible user interfaces.
- Skilled in writing unit tests and delivering thorough test coverage using tools such as Jest or Mocha.
- Experience integrating with APIs, databases (SQL/NoSQL), caching tools (e.g., Redis), and cloud infrastructure (AWS/Azure).
- Ability to influence, lead front-end activities, set best practice, and mentor other developers.
Desirable Experience:
- Previous experience working within central government.
- Knowledge of public cloud technologies and cloud hosting.
- Experience working in Agile delivery environments.
