As our Family department continues to grow, we are seeking an experienced Family Costs Draftsperson to join our specialist team. This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled costs professional with expertise in legal aid Family billing to play a key role within a highly respected and collaborative national practice.

The Role

You will be responsible for managing a varied caseload of Family legal aid billing matters, ensuring the accurate preparation, drafting and submission of high‑cost case plans, bills of costs, CCMS claims, and associated legal aid work. Working remotely or from one of our national offices, you will support our Family teams in maintaining robust compliance standards, maximising cost recovery, and ensuring the efficient management of billing processes across complex Family matters.

Key Responsibilities

  • Preparing, drafting and managing bills of costs in high‑cost Family matters, including legal aid, inter partes and court‑assessed bills.
  • Assisting the Head of Civil billing with progressing files through the billing process, especially those with complex difficulties, involving negotiation with the Legal Aid Agency, or other solicitors or Counsel.
  • Producing and submitting claims through CCMS, ensuring compliance with current Legal Aid Agency guidance and requirements.
  • Preparing high‑cost case plans, amendments and related documentation.
  • Supporting fee earners with costs queries, billing advice and case planning guidance.
  • Managing a high volume of work with exceptional accuracy, efficiency and attention to detail.
  • Monitoring developments in legal aid billing regulations, costs procedures and best practice within Family law.
  • Contributing to the continuous improvement of costs processes and financial performance within the department.

About You

We are looking for a motivated and detail‑oriented professional who brings:

  • Demonstrable experience in Family legal aid costs drafting, including high‑cost Family matters.
  • Strong working knowledge of CCMS and proven experience preparing and submitting claims.
  • Sound understanding of public and private Family law proceedings and associated legal aid frameworks.
  • Use of Costs Master is desirable but not essential.
  • Excellent organisational, analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • A meticulous approach to accuracy, compliance and financial management.
  • The ability to manage competing priorities and work effectively to deadlines within a fast‑paced environment.
  • A collaborative and proactive approach, with strong communication skills and a commitment to delivering high‑quality work.
