GSL Education are seeking a skilled and motivated Construction Instructor (Joinery specialism) to join a specialist 14–19 SEMH vocational school. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a genuine difference to the lives of young people who thrive in practical, hands-on learning environments. This would be a permanent role with the school.

The Role

  • Deliver engaging and meaningful construction and joinery-based learning to students with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, many of whom have previously disengaged from mainstream education.
  • The focus is on re-engagement, employability skills, and positive outcomes, rather than purely academic performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver practical joinery and construction sessions aligned to vocational pathways.
  • Support learners to develop technical skills, teamwork, resilience, and work readiness.
  • Create a safe, structured, and supportive workshop environment.
  • Adapt teaching approaches to meet individual learning, behavioural, and emotional needs.
  • Work collaboratively with teaching staff, pastoral teams, and external professionals.
  • Promote positive behaviour and act as a consistent, trusted adult role model.
  • Maintain health and safety standards within the workshop at all times.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Proven experience in construction and joinery (industry or instructional background).
  • Experience working with young people, particularly those with SEMH or additional needs (desirable).
  • A calm, patient, and resilient approach to behaviour management.
  • Passionate about vocational education and second-chance learning.
  • Teaching or assessing qualifications (e.g. PTLLS, AET, TAQA) are desirable but not essential.
  • Strong understanding of health and safety within a construction setting.
