Education and Eligibility
Education required: To apply for this placement, you must be currently studying an Undergraduate degree in Medical Device Design or Medical Device Engineering, Product Design or Industrial Design, Design Engineering or Innovation Design, Sustainable Design or Environmental Design, Materials Science or Packaging Technology, Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering with a sustainability or healthcare focus.
Please read the degree requirements for each role carefully before applying.
Other requirements: You will have completed a minimum of 2 years of your undergraduate degree but will not have graduated at the start of your placement. You must be enrolled at a UK (United Kingdom) or ROI (Republic of Ireland) University for the duration of your placement.
If you have already graduated with a Bachelor\\\’s Degree and are currently studying a postgraduate Masters, you are not eligible for this programme.
Language requirement: Written and spoken fluency in English

Compensation and Work Arrangement
Salary: A salary of £25,400 plus a bonus.
Workplace Arrangements: Flexible working via performance with choice (office & home working may be available)

The Role
Overview of the Department
The Inclusive Design team is a group within Packaging Development & Design, one of the sub-groups within Drug Product Development (DPD), R&D, based in Ware, UK. At GSK, one of our cultural pillars is to be ambitious for patients, and for the Inclusive Design team, the patient is at the heart of everything we do. Inclusive Design ensures that products and services are accessible and usable by as many people as possible, regardless of their abilities.
To meet our objective of ensuring that our patients, and the people who care for them, can successfully engage with and use our medicines, the Inclusive Design team is responsible for conducting patient engagement research and combining it with disease understanding to enrich a synthesis of the patient persona types, patient experience journey, and their capabilities. These findings can be leveraged by teams in medicine development to contribute to overall product design.
The Inclusive Design team also leads sustainability objectives to develop truly innovative new packaging and devices that help meet GSK\\\’s ambition to reduce our impact on the environment and lead to positive nature change and reduce climate impact.
Key Placement Learnings
- Support the development of sustainable medical devices and packaging, applying circular design principles and eco-innovation strategies.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate environmental and user-centred considerations into product lifecycle decisions.
- Monitor and evaluate product and process performance using sustainability metrics, contributing to continuous improvement.
- Participate in design concept development and testing, and stakeholder workshops to test and refine sustainable concepts.
- Develop skills in technical reporting, data visualisation, and stakeholder communication within a regulated medical device development environment.
