Are you a forward-thinking scientist passionate about bridging the gap between computational design and experimental work? Within the Large Molecule Research (LMR) department at GSK, we are pivoting from traditional wet-lab process-reliant sequence generation to a pioneering, AI-driven computational design paradigm. We are seeking a diligent and motivated Molecule Design Engineer to join our Antibody Engineering team within the Molecular Design and Engineering (MDE) section. Positioned at the interface of molecular design, structural biology, and property prediction, you will drive optimization of biopharmaceuticals.

In this highly collaborative role, you will bridge wet-lab molecular biology and the cutting-edge predictive tools provided by our partners. By owning our in silico risk-scoring systems, evaluating predictive models with real-world experimental data, and leading targeted engineering efforts, you will directly shape the developability of GSK's next generation of life-changing biopharmaceuticals.

In this role you will:

  • Work within the GSK project portfolio:
    • Identify risks and liabilities in early-stage biologics using predictive models and sequence and structure analysis.
    • Interpret the impact of identified risks on project progression.
    • Mitigate risks by designing de-risked, more developable variants, including complex antibody formats such as multispecifics.
    • Deliver the DNA required to express designed molecules.
  • Advance technologies within Large Molecule Research:
    • Act as a liaison between Large Molecule Research and computational teams developing predictive models and deploying them on GSK IT infrastructure.
    • Evaluate predictive models using experimental data.
    • Develop in silico risk-scoring systems and interpret how identified risks may affect molecule progression.
    • Design and run engineering strategies to mitigate identified risks.
    • Build and maintain computational tools, such as dashboards, to support these activities.

Essential skills:

  • Experience in antibody discovery and/or design, with a strong understanding of how antibody sequence and structure influence function and developability.
  • Experience with, or knowledge of, bispecifics and other complex antibody formats.
  • Skilled in designing expression constructs and plasmids.
  • Experience navigating complex data systems, analysing datasets, and using data to support model building, molecule design, and decision-making.
  • Skilled in using AI tools (Copilot, Claude), generating Python scripts, SQL queries, using BigQuery, Spotfire or similar software, and working in cloud-based environments such as Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder involvement within complex matrix project teams.

Nice to have:

  • Experience in protein/antibody modelling and interpretation of the structure data.
  • Application of AI for biologics discovery and optimization.

This role will temporarily be based at Stevenage. However, the Company plans to relocate its offices to Cambridge. The location of this role will therefore subsequently change to Cambridge in accordance with timelines to be set by the Company. The relocation is currently proposed to take effect by early 2029.
