As the Director of Onyx Application Engineering, you will lead the engineering organisation responsible for designing, building, and evolving the digital products that power GSK Research. Working closely with Product, Platform, Infrastructure, DevOps, and Data teams, you will help shape the future of the Onyx ecosystem by delivering scalable, secure, and user-centred solutions that enable scientific discovery and accelerate artificial intelligence and machine learning innovation across GSK.

You will play a critical role in defining engineering strategy, advancing technical excellence, and developing a high-performing organisation focused on delivering meaningful outcomes for researchers, scientists, and engineers. This is a unique opportunity to influence both the engineering roadmap and organisational culture of one of GSK's most strategic technology platforms.

  • Recruit, lead, develop, and retain a high-functioning organisation of engineers focused on excellence in full-stack software delivery.
  • Be detail driven, and able to manage their own or team's time across several projects at the same time.
  • Partner with Onyx's Infrastructure, DevOps, and Support organisations to ensure robust automation, operability, and support are core to all services from day one.
  • Work with Onyx Data & Knowledge Platforms to build closed loops: data feeds ways of working, and ways of working generate more data.
  • Ensure the Application Engineering team executes on that roadmap and provides world-class experiences to our customers.
  • Lead the development and execution of a framework for usability tests with users to gather direct feedback and work with product teams to ensure feedback loop drives continuous improvement of data powered experiences.
  • Partner with heads of the Platform groups to build intuitive, simple and elegant interfaces for access to their core services, creating a single-pane-of-glass view of the entire Onyx platform for our customers.
  • Along with other Heads of Engineering on Onyx, provide a strong voice for modern architecture across the Onyx organisation and beyond.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Engineering, or related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Significant experience leading the development, delivery, and operation of enterprise software platforms, products, or services.
  • Specialised experience building, leading, and developing high-performing engineering teams, including leadership of managers and matrixed organisations.
  • Strong software engineering background with experience delivering complex applications and data products that support business, research, or scientific objectives.
  • World class understanding of modern software development practices, including application architecture, testing, deployment, observability, and lifecycle management.
  • Best-in-class working with frameworks such as JavaScript, TypeScript, React, Angular, Python, Go, Rust, or comparable technologies.
  • Strong experience implementing DevOps and CI/CD practices using industry-standard development and deployment toolchains.
  • Experience leading Agile software development teams and applying Agile delivery methodologies at scale.
  • Master's degree in computer science, Software Engineering, Data Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience leading engineering organisations supporting AI/ML, scientific computing, research platforms, data science, or advanced analytics environments.
  • Strong track record of delivering technology solutions that have driven measurable business, scientific, or operational outcomes.
  • Experience integrating third-party applications with enterprise platforms, data products, and knowledge management systems.
  • Experience in establishing engineering standards, software quality frameworks, governance processes, and best practices across large organisations.
  • Industry visibility through technical publications, conference speaking engagements, open-source contributions, or participation in engineering communities.
  • Experience attracting, developing, and retaining high-performing engineering talent within competitive technology markets.
  • Experience leading global engineering teams across multiple geographies and cultures.
