Senior Head of Health and Safety

We are seeking a Senior Head of Health and Safety to lead our SHEQ strategy across a high-volume, unionized transport network of ~5,000 employees.

Reporting to the CEO, the Senior Head of Health and Safety will serve as the principal advisor to the Board, shifting our operations from standard compliance to a modern safety science model (HOP, Safety II, and Restorative Just Culture).

  • Core Responsibilities
  • Strategy & Governance: Own the SHEQ framework, maintain ISO certifications, ensure regulatory compliance, and advise Executive leadership on risk management.
  • Safety Culture & Learning: Embed Human & Organizational Performance (HOP) principles, Restorative Just Culture, and Learning Teams to drive continuous improvement.
  • Operations & Sustainability: Oversee audits, incident investigations, fleet decarbonization safety, and environmental initiatives (emissions, waste, pollution).
  • Leadership & Stakeholders: Lead internal SHEQ teams and manage relationships with Trade Unions, regulators, and transport authorities.
  • Senior Head of Health and Safety Key Requirements
  • NEBOSH Diploma or NVQ Level 6 Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety.
  • Recognized Environmental qualification.
  • Experience: Executive-level leadership in safety-critical, complex operational or transport environments.
  • Expertise: Deep knowledge of UK safety legislation, organizational culture change, and modern safety frameworks (HOP, Safety II).
