A leading clean energy infrastructure business is seeking an experienced Head of Commissioning to lead commissioning strategy and delivery across a growing portfolio of grid-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS), EV charging infrastructure and renewable power assets. The company develops, finances, builds and operates battery systems and clean power infrastructure, with activity across grid-connected batteries, fleet electrification, second-life batteries and portable power solutions. This is a senior leadership role responsible for ensuring assets are safely energised, tested, integrated and handed over into operations.

Key Duties:

  • Lead commissioning strategy and delivery across grid-scale BESS, EV charging infrastructure and renewable energy projects.
  • Manage commissioning from construction completion through energisation, testing, performance validation and operational handover.
  • Oversee commissioning of battery containers, PCS/inverters, transformers, switchgear, metering, SCADA, EMS, BMS and grid connection infrastructure.
  • Build and lead the commissioning team, including engineers, subcontractors, OEMs and specialist vendors.
  • Develop standardised commissioning plans, test scripts, checklists, procedures and handover documentation.
  • Coordinate closely with construction, delivery, product, operations, asset management and technical teams.
  • Manage energisation planning, LOTO, permits, RAMS and safe systems of work across active CDM sites.
  • Lead technical troubleshooting, defect close-out and issue escalation across electrical, controls, software and network infrastructure.
  • Track commissioning progress, risks, blockers and lessons learned across the portfolio to drive continuous improvement.

Requirements:

  • 10+ years’ experience in commissioning, electrical engineering or technical project delivery.
  • Strong background in BESS, renewable energy, EV charging, grid connection or critical power infrastructure.
  • Proven experience leading commissioning teams across multiple projects or portfolio environments.
  • Strong understanding of HV/LV systems, inverters, transformers, switchgear, metering, controls and grid interfaces.
  • Experience with CDM regulations, RAMS, LOTO, permit systems and site safety requirements.
  • Comfortable managing subcontractors, OEMs and third-party commissioning partners.
  • Strong stakeholder management, reporting, issue escalation and technical leadership skills.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience with grid-scale BESS projects above 50MW.
  • Knowledge of EMS / BMS / SCADA / OCPP or charger management systems.
  • Previous work with DNOs, NGESO / NESO, National Grid, ICPs, IDNOs or OEMs.
  • HV Authorised Person / Senior Authorised Person background.
  • EV charging / fleet electrification infrastructure experience.
  • Experience creating commissioning standards, playbooks or training frameworks.

This is an opportunity to take ownership of commissioning across a fast-growing clean energy portfolio, covering battery storage, electric fleet infrastructure and grid-connected power assets. The role is suited to a commissioning leader who can operate beyond single-project delivery - someone able to build structure, standardise processes, lead teams and ensure repeatable delivery across a growing project pipeline.
