The Role
This is a practical, varied role where you will work closely with teaching staff and learners to ensure a safe, effective, and organised workshop environment. You will play a vital part in supporting the next generation of tradespeople through demonstrations, instruction, and supervision. Please note this is a Term Time post, temporary for 2 years.
Key Responsibilities
- Implement Health and Safety measures within the workshop, ensuring full compliance.
- Prepare and maintain equipment, tools, and materials for lessons and demonstrations.
- Set up rigs and training areas under the guidance of lecturers.
- Assist with practical assessments, student observations, and technical demonstrations.
- Manage stock levels, place orders, and maintain accurate inventories.
- Collaborate with other Technicians to ensure all facilities remain in excellent condition.
Job Description
- Make orders with approved suppliers and receive, store, monitor and coordinate all stock materials, ensuring stock levels are maintained within budget for all workshops allocated to this role.
- Ensure orders are correct and meet the quality requirements of the department.
- Help and advise learners in the selection of suitable components and items in preparation for assessments, projects, and competitions.
- Isolate or quarantine faulty or damaged equipment and arrange for repairs.
- Check the operation and safety of equipment before commissioning.
- Commission the equipment and inform staff and learners that it meets the required regulatory standards.
- Prepare materials, equipment, and resources for learners’ usage as requested by Tutors, Lecturers, and Instructors.
- Work closely with employers to develop industry-specific training rigs as required.
- Support Tutors, Lecturers, and Instructors in the preparation of ‘learning rigs’.
- Ensure workshops, tools, equipment, and materials comply with all safety requirements and conduct regular Risk Assessments.
- Liaise with relevant staff regarding reporting and recording of workshop incidents and general H&S good practice advice.
- Assume responsibility for security of all workshop areas allocated to this role.
- Prepare assessment areas and equipment for student assessment as required.
- Dismantle practical exercises and salvage material for re-use.
- Carry out routine servicing and maintenance of all portable power and static machines, ensuring effective use at all times.
- Maintain up-to-date stock records of tools, equipment, and consumables and order new as required.
- Maintain documentation regarding workshop practices, including Health & Safety and risk assessments.
- Maintain good housekeeping practice within your areas of responsibility.
- Work with other staff to ensure student discipline is maintained.
- Take part in meetings, staff development, and other staff events as requested.
- Supervise the daily schedule of apprentice technicians to support them in achieving their required competencies.
- Liaise with the Programme Manager regarding the implementation and monitoring practices of equipment within workshops.
- Perform workshop risk assessments for any new equipment and changing workshop usage.
- Perform any other duties reasonably requested by the Programme Area Manager.
