Based in the Greater Glasgow region of Scotland, GRW Talent’s client is an independent manufacturer of III-V photonic devices providing custom foundry services in InP, GaAs, GaN and GaSb on 2”, 3” and 4” wafers. They are at the forefront of laser chip development for next generation AI data centres.

With increased demand and a steady Tier 1 customer base, they now need to recruit a VP of Engineering. Reporting to the Managing Director, the VP Engineering will lead the technology vision, strategy, and execution for a high growth photonics product family, driving innovation and development of high-performance semiconductor lasers and optical amplifiers for optical communications and advanced sensing applications.

This executive will play a critical role in aligning R&D, product development, and commercialisation efforts with the company’s long-term growth strategy. The VP of Engineering will ensure that the Scottish business continues to be the product development centre of excellence and the cornerstone for ring-fenced R&D and IP production.

Key functional areas to manage include:

  • Technology Strategy & Leadership – define and oversee execution of the tech roadmap across optical communications, AI/datacentres and sensing technologies.
  • Product Development and Commercialisation – work closely with sales and executive level BD colleagues to understand market gaps, bring new tech to market and help close enterprise deals.
  • Manufacturing & Scale-up – support the transfer of new technology through a volume pilot FAB and ultimately transferred into high volume Asian partner(s).
  • Qualification & Reliability – build the rigour and controls for enhanced product quality and reliability.
  • R&D, Innovation and Efficiency – integrate a multi-disciplinary team across functions that fosters a culture of NPI and NPD whilst generating high value IP.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration – close involvement with sales, BD, quality, PMO and operations.

The successful candidate is educated to Masters / PhD level in an engineering, semiconductor, opto-electronic or nanotechnology discipline. You are a well-rounded professional able to bridge the gap between sub-micron device/laser physics, design for manufacture and ultimately high volume production. This will suit candidates already running mixed device, product development and product integration teams. A long spell as CTO, Head of Engineering or Engineering Director is a path to this role.

A proven track record in developing and commercialising photonic or optical communication products and a strong understanding of lasers (DFB, SOAs), and end-user requirements is essential.

This represents an incredible opportunity to join a highly ambitious global semis/photonics business developing leading edge technology for current and future datacentre power control. You should expect a market leading base salary and comprehensive executive level benefits package including stock options and profit share. Candidates can work in a hybrid fashion and be based across the UK (3 days in Glasgow) and sponsorship for candidates outside of the UK will be considered.
