A leading Wills, Trusts, and Estate Disputes team is seeking an experienced Contentious Probate Solicitor / Associate to handle a high-quality caseload of complex, sensitive, and often high-value estate and trust disputes. This role is ideal for an ambitious litigator looking to develop within a specialist team offering excellent work, genuine collaboration, and professional growth.
The successful candidate will manage a broad range of contentious probate and trust matters, working closely with colleagues and external professionals. The work involves high-value estates, complex family dynamics, technical legal challenges, and clients who require both strategic guidance and empathetic support.
Key Responsibilities- Managing a varied caseload of contentious probate and trust disputes, including:
- Challenges to the validity of wills and lifetime gifts
- Claims under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975
- Disputes between executors, trustees, and beneficiaries
- Applications relating to the removal or substitution of personal representatives or trustees
- Drafting and reviewing pleadings, witness statements, and other court documents
- Conducting mediations and handling settlement negotiations
- Liaising with counsel, experts, and other professionals
- Providing clear, empathetic, and strategic advice to clients
- Supporting junior team members and contributing to their development
- Identifying opportunities for internal referrals across private client and dispute resolution teams
- 5+ years PQE with strong litigation experience, ideally within contentious probate or trust disputes
- ACTAPS membership (or working towards it) is highly desirable
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong analytical ability and sound judgment
- High level of client care and the ability to manage emotionally sensitive matters
- Confident in running files from instruction through to resolution
- Comfortable contributing to business development and relationship-building
