We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Practice Manager to lead the operational, financial, and administrative functions of our busy GP practice. This is a key leadership role responsible for ensuring the effective and efficient running of the practice, supporting our clinical and administrative teams, and ensuring we deliver safe, high-quality, patient-centred care. Practice managers oversee the business and organisational aspects of GP surgeries including finance, staffing, compliance and strategic development. Working closely with the GP Partners and senior team, the successful candidate will play a central role in driving service improvement, maintaining regulatory compliance, and ensuring the long-term sustainability and development of the practice.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide strong leadership and day-to-day operational management of the practice.
  • Line manage administrative and management staff and support the development of the wider team.
  • Promote a positive, collaborative working environment across clinical and non-clinical staff.
  • Oversee recruitment, workforce planning, staff training, and performance management.
  • Lead on staff appraisals, policies, and HR processes.
  • Ensure the smooth and efficient running of all practice services.
  • Implement systems and processes to support high-quality patient care and improve operational efficiency.
  • Manage practice facilities, equipment, and health and safety requirements.
  • Oversee patient services including complaints management and service improvements.
  • Ensure effective use of clinical systems and digital services.
  • Manage the practice budget, financial planning, and reporting.
  • Monitor income streams including NHS contracts and enhanced services.
  • Work with accountants and partners to ensure financial sustainability.
  • Identify opportunities to improve income generation and operational efficiency.

Qualifications

  • Previous management experience within primary care, healthcare, or a similar environment.
  • Strong leadership and people-management skills.
  • Experience of financial management and budgeting.
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a busy healthcare setting.

About us: Grovelands Medical Centre is a well-established and busy GP practice located in Reading, serving a patient population of approximately 14,000 patients. The practice operates from its main site at 701 Oxford Road, Reading and provides a wide range of NHS primary care services to the local community. Our clinical team consists of 7 GP Partners and 5 Salaried GPs, supported by a diverse multidisciplinary team including nurses, healthcare assistants, pharmacists, paramedics, care coordinators and other healthcare professionals. We are also supported by an experienced administrative and patient services team who work together to deliver high-quality, patient-centred care. The practice uses EMIS Web as its clinical system and is committed to continuous improvement in patient services and operational efficiency. We work collaboratively as part of the Reading Central Primary Care Network (PCN), enabling us to deliver enhanced services and integrated care for our patient population. Grovelands Medical Centre prides itself on being a supportive, forward-thinking practice with a strong team ethos and a shared commitment to providing safe, effective and compassionate healthcare.
