We are seeking a SAFETY SYSTEMS ENGINEER to support the assessment, control and assurance of safety risks associated with electromagnetic fields (EMF), radiofrequency (RF) exposure, radiation protection and environmental protection within regulated defence and engineering environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess and manage personnel exposure to RF and electromagnetic fields in accordance with STANAG 2345 and ICNIRP guidelines.
- Support radiation protection activities in line with JSP 392 – Management of Radiation Protection in Defence.
- Ensure systems comply with the UK Control of Electromagnetic Fields at Work Regulations 2016.
- Interpret and apply the EU EMF Directive (2013/35/EU) within system design, installation and operational contexts.
- Conduct safety risk assessments and contribute to hazard identification, analysis and mitigation strategies.
- Support the preparation and review of safety documentation including safety cases, hazard logs and exposure assessments.
- Ensure compliance with DEFCON 68 requirements for hazardous articles, mixtures and substances.
- Contribute to environmental protection activities in line with JSP 418 – Management of Environmental Protection in Defence.
- Liaise with engineering, safety, environmental and operational stakeholders to embed safety requirements early in design.
- Support audits, inspections and regulatory reviews related to EMF, radiation and environmental compliance.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Strong understanding of EMF / RF exposure assessment and control.
- Knowledge of radiation protection principles within defence or regulated environments.
- Ability to interpret and apply UK legislation, defence policy and EU directives.
- Experience producing and reviewing safety and compliance documentation.
- Familiarity with hazardous substances management and environmental protection requirements.
- Risk assessment and hazard management skills.
- Clear technical communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to work effectively in multi‑disciplinary engineering teams.
- Consultancy mindset with the ability to balance safety, compliance and delivery pressures.
- Experience working in defence, aerospace, critical infrastructure or other highly regulated sectors.
- Practical experience applying EMF / RF exposure standards and guidance.
- Familiarity with JSP 392, JSP 418, DEFCON 68 or equivalent defence safety frameworks.
- Experience supporting system lifecycle activities from design through installation and operation.
- Exposure to regulatory compliance, audits or assurance activities.
- Consultancy experience or working across multiple projects is desirable.
